Ministry of Education and Training seeks opinions on limiting university admission wishes in 2026

According to experts, limiting university admission wishes will help candidates consider their majors more carefully, avoiding spreading out applications, which is costly and wasteful.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) is seeking opinions on limiting candidates' university admission wishes so that it can be applied in the 2026 admissions season.

The Ministry offers three options: Maximum of 5 wishes, maximum of 10 wishes and unlimited wishes.

Ngoc Minh - a 12th grade student at Yen Hoa High School - believes that students should still register for multiple choices because this helps increase the chances of admission for candidates.

This is also the opinion of Bich Diep - a 12th grade student at the High School for Social Sciences and Humanities (Hanoi National University).

"That way, students can try to achieve their goals and feel more secure and comfortable when applying," Diep said.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Son - Principal of Hanoi National University of Education - said that it is necessary to limit the number of university admission applications.

"Registering many wishes spread out, resulting in unclear career commitments, leading to waste later. Therefore, it should be limited to a certain extent" - Mr. Son said.

The Principal of Hanoi National University of Education said that when students choose a career, they must consider many factors such as their own abilities and interests, whether the career is suitable, what are the characteristics of the career, whether they are committed to the career, etc.

"Choosing a career is extremely difficult. But when students have a clear direction, choice, and commitment to the career, when they are accepted into that career, they will try to overcome difficulties and practice the profession" - Mr. Son analyzed.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), in 2025, the number of candidates applying for university admission reached a record high of more than 7.6 million. This is a sudden increase compared to nearly 4 million in 2024 and 3.4 million in 2023, while the number of candidates applying for admission increased by only more than 100,000 compared to 2024 and nearly 200,000 compared to 2023.

Also according to the Ministry of Education and Training, the number of candidates registering for 5 wishes accounts for the highest percentage at 39.6%; 30.9% of candidates register for 10 wishes; 29.5% register for more than 10 wishes. In particular, 6.7% of candidates register for more than 20 wishes.
