The turning point of the US presidential election

Super Tuesday (March 5) is the biggest event in the US presidential primary election, when voters of all parties cast their ballots in 15 states and the Samoa territory, according to AFP.

Early victory for Mr. Trump?

In the Republican race, there are 865 electoral votes for the two remaining candidates, former President Donald Trump and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, to compete for. The candidate who gets 1,215 electoral votes will become the party's representative in the presidential election in November. To date, Mr. Trump has won almost every primary election except the District of Columbia.

In theory, Mr. Trump can only "grab" the Republican ticket as early as March 12, but in reality, the race can be decided after the results of Super Tuesday. According to ABC News, Ms. Haley is predicted to have a hard time winning in any of the 15 states that vote on March 5. The former ambassador herself has also revealed that the decision to continue depends on her "competitiveness."

"Super Tuesday" in the US election: Why is it "super"?

Just one day before, Mr. Trump had an absolute victory and won all 29 electoral votes in the state of North Dakota. In addition, the former president also received other good news when the US Supreme Court overturned the Colorado court's ruling banning him from running for president because of his participation in the uprising, related to the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2020. The court did not say whether Mr. Trump had insurrection or not, but only stated that only the US Congress has the right to ban a person from running for federal office. The ruling ensures that Mr. Trump will be able to run for office in all 50 states and ends the legal efforts of legal experts and some Democrats to block him.

Speaking at a weekend rally in Virginia, Mr Trump said he was rocketing to the Republican nomination and was confident of a rematch with President Joe Biden in November.

Biden's ticket is hard to miss

On the Democratic side, there are 1,420 electoral votes up for grabs on Super Tuesday. President Biden is comfortably ahead of challengers like Rep. Dean Phillips and author Marianne Williamson. The White House chief currently has 206 of the 1,968 electoral votes needed to win the Democratic ticket and is expected to finish as early as March 19.

The Democratic race is less dramatic than the Republican race, which is typical when incumbent presidents run for re-election. However, President Biden is facing pressure from the "uncommitted" movement of those who oppose his policy on the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Last week, the movement won two electoral votes in Michigan and is continuing to campaign in Minnesota, one of the states that will vote on March 5. According to a survey by The New York Times last week, Mr. Biden’s support among blue-collar workers and people of color has been declining, and nearly two-thirds of voters who supported the 82-year-old leader in the 2020 presidential election expressed concern about his age.
