According to a VNA reporter in Belgium, scientists in Ghent city have just announced a study that could open up a more effective treatment direction for patients with blood infections, called a "spectacular breakthrough" in the medical field.

Sepsis occurs when the immune system overreacts to an infection, leading to organ failure, amputation, or even death if not treated promptly.

The new discovery by Belgian scientists builds on previous research, which found that patients with sepsis often accumulate large amounts of lactic acid and have difficulty breaking it down.

Researchers discovered that these patients had a severe deficiency of vitamin B1 in their mitochondria, the “powerhouses” of cells. They hypothesized: could vitamin B1 supplementation improve sepsis?

Initial results suggest that vitamin B1 does indeed improve cell function, but the effect is greater when combined with glucose.

Explaining the mechanism, scientists said that glucose not only provides energy directly to cells but also supports the absorption and metabolism of vitamin B1, thereby increasing the recovery ability of damaged cells during infection.

Although these are promising results, scientists also emphasize that more research is needed because the current tests have only been conducted on small animals and have not yet been applied to humans.

However, this step forward is still considered a significant achievement, reflecting the talent and efforts of Belgian researchers in finding more effective treatments for the above dangerous and common disease./.
