The leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health stated that the choice of a special microsurgical method in the hand transplant to the leg of a 23-week pregnant woman carrying twins is considered a breakthrough solution, not only saving the limb and ensuring the safety of the pregnancy, but also demonstrating the sense of responsibility, close coordination and dedication of the medical team.
Previously, on September 13, Binh Duong General Hospital received Ms. LNP (transferred from Di An Regional Medical Center) with a severe crushed wound on her right forearm due to a work accident.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with her forearm almost severed, with broken bones, damaged arteries, and the risk of losing her hand and her life in danger. Notably, the patient was 23 weeks pregnant with twins.
Upon admission, the hospital activated the red alert and mobilized relevant departments to coordinate the treatment. Doctors determined that the twins were in stable condition, but the right arm was crushed and almost severed, requiring emergency surgery.
The team decided to temporarily transfer the right hand to the right leg using an arteriovenous microsurgery technique to preserve the limb, limit infection and create conditions for the next steps of reconstruction.
The surgery lasted 5 hours, after the blood circulation was good, the fingertips were pink again. 12 days after the surgery, the mother's health was stable, she was alert, and could walk lightly. The incision on her calf was dry, the transplanted hand was pink, and the fetus was stable.
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recognizes and highly appreciates the professional capacity of Binh Duong General Hospital in handling urgent and complicated cases.
