Are US allies considering reducing intelligence sharing with the Trump administration?

According to the source, members of the Five Eyes alliance, as well as Israel and Saudi Arabia, are concerned that the identities of foreign intelligence sources could fall into the hands of Russia due to US negligence and are therefore considering reducing intelligence sharing with Washington.

Today, March 7, NBC News quoted five informed sources revealing that some US allies are considering reducing intelligence sharing activities with Washington in response to the Trump administration's return to building relations with Russia.

Allies are being pushed into a dilemma over fears that foreign intelligence assets could be exposed by US indiscretions, according to sources including two foreign officials.

Every intelligence agency takes seriously its commitment to foreign agents and to protecting the identity and safety of those sources. Anything that would threaten that commitment could force some intelligence agencies to refuse to share some information with the United States, the sources said.

US allies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia and members of the Five Eyes group (in addition to the US, there are the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand), are said to be considering adjusting current intelligence-sharing rules in response to the US-Russia warming of relations.

“These discussions are ongoing,” according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks.

The Trump administration has shaken long-held views of Washington among close allies and whether the United States is still a side they can rely on, an unnamed Western official said.

"There are very serious discussions going on about the type of information that can be shared with the US. The Five Eyes group has always worked on the principle of not spying on each other," the official said, adding that the level of trust is currently wavering.

However, up to this point, the parties have not made any specific decisions or actions.

The review is part of a broader review of many allies' relationships with the United States, including diplomacy, trade and military cooperation, as well as intelligence, the sources said.
