Chinese astronauts break US record by doing something extraordinary in space

China says two of its astronauts have completed a nine-hour spacewalk, breaking the record held by the United States in 2001.

Cai Xozhe and Song Lingdong, two crew members of the Shenzhou-19 spaceflight, finished the nine-hour extra-spacecraft activity, also known as a spacewalk, just before 10 p.m. Beijing time, according to the China Manned Space Administration.

According to NASA, the previous record was 8 hours and 56 minutes set by American astronauts James Voss and Susan Helms on March 12, 2001.

China has made significant efforts to assert its position as a major power in space – an area that countries, including the United States, are increasingly looking to not only for scientific gain but also for resource and national security purposes.

In recent years, the China National Space Administration has carried out a series of increasingly complex robotic lunar exploration missions, including the first sample return from the dark side of the moon earlier this year.

The country is also aiming to become the second nation, after the United States, to land on the Moon and has unveiled specially designed spacesuits for the mission, which is expected to take place in 2030.
