The world's leading researcher in complex geometry has left New York to join Westlake University as a professor of mathematics.
According to the school's website, he joined the Institute of Theoretical Science in May, just months after being appointed a full professor at Syracuse University (New York).
According to SCMP , Yuan is one of four mathematicians recruited by Westlake University this summer, after many years of building their careers in the US. The other three are mathematical analyst Zhongwei Shen (University of Kentucky), machine learning statistician Yiyuan She (Florida State University) and applied mathematician Hai Zhu (Flatiron Institute, New York).

Professor Yuan said he had long wanted to return to China, following in the footsteps of many scholars who have joined Westlake in recent years. “Mathematics can be studied anywhere – all you need is paper, pen and a computer with an internet connection. If you have colleagues with the same passion around you, it’s even better,” he said.
He said that when he was invited to give a lecture at Westlake last year, he was impressed by the “first-class” facilities and the “vibrant, energetic” academic atmosphere, which made Westlake his first choice when he decided to return.
Here, Yuan will continue his research in the field of “multidimensional complex variables” – an advanced branch of mathematics that extends the concept of complex numbers to multidimensional spaces.
Complex numbers are important tools in modern science and engineering, with applications in many technologies such as mobile networks and image processing.
Yuan’s passion for mathematics began when he was a student at Peking University. He belonged to the “golden generation” of the Mathematics Department – a group that has trained many outstanding international mathematicians such as number theorist Yun Zhiwei (MIT) and algebraic geometer Xu Chenyang (Princeton).
Yuan went to the United States to study in the mid-2000s, receiving his PhD in Mathematics from Rutgers University under the guidance of Professor Xiaojun Huang, a renowned Chinese-born scholar of complex geometry. He worked at Johns Hopkins University before joining Syracuse in 2013.
At Syracuse, Yuan rose from assistant professor to associate professor and full professor, won multiple research grants from the Simons Foundation, and was invited to present at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing. Over 12 years, he taught more than 10 courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
By joining Westlake, Yuan hopes to promote research in complex analysis and contribute to building the Chinese mathematical community. He will teach, train doctoral students and attract excellent students to study.
He plans to offer a course on multidimensional complex variables for graduate students and seniors next spring. “I hope young people will have the opportunity to approach mathematics at the most advanced level,” Professor Yuan said.
