Strategic step forward in production scale and operational efficiency
With a total investment of nearly 90 million USD, the expansion project has increased the factory's capacity by 50%, making Phu Bai the factory with the largest beer production capacity of the Carlsberg Group in Asia, and at the same time being among the leading groups of the whole Group in terms of operational efficiency.
The expanded factory helps meet the increasingly diverse needs of consumers, with a rich product portfolio from premium international brands such as Carlsberg, 1664 Blanc, Tuborg, Somersby to familiar domestic brands such as Halida and Huda. With outstanding production capacity, Carlsberg Vietnam affirms its commitment to bringing consumers premium beer products that meet international standards, are stable in quality and constantly innovate.
“The Phu Bai Brewery expansion project demonstrates our long-term commitment to Vietnam,” said Andrew Khan, General Director of Carlsberg Vietnam. “This is currently Carlsberg’s largest brewery in Asia, equipped with modern technology to create superior quality products with higher efficiency and minimize environmental impact. However, this is not just about expanding scale, but also about our efforts to better serve consumers, strengthen the supply chain and create sustainable values for the communities we serve.”
Mr. Phan Quy Phuong, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee said: "Carlsberg Vietnam has long been a trusted partner in the development journey of Hue City and the Central region. The expansion of Phu Bai Brewery not only brings advanced production standards, but also demonstrates the company's strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility."
Future-ready manufacturing model with sustainable development at its core
Designed as a “future-ready” production facility, the expanded Phu Bai Brewery integrates leading-edge technologies to optimize operational efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Notably, the factory owns one of the fastest packaging lines in Vietnam, along with a high-efficiency brewing line that saves 20% of water and 15% of energy. An electric forklift system using AI technology helps increase safety in high-traffic areas. At the same time, a real-time data dashboard helps optimize line performance, ensuring stable quality and operational accuracy.
The Phu Bai Brewery has also been redesigned to meet Carlsberg Group’s global health and safety standards, with a pedestrian-only zone, locally ventilated and cooled packaging areas, a modern upgraded canteen and an improved uniform management system. Notably, during the construction period, the project recorded more than 1.4 million safe working hours.
Not only optimizing performance, Phu Bai Brewery also continuously improves product quality. Carlsberg Vietnam has been honored many times with prestigious international awards for beer quality, including the Monde Selection Gold Award for Huda and Halida beers in 2024.
Ms. Joy Rice, Vice President of Supply Chain, Carlsberg Asia, emphasized: “Vietnam plays a strategic role in Carlsberg’s global development orientation, not only because of its market potential, but also because of the team’s capacity, the strong support of the government and community, and the shared aspiration for a green future. With this expansion project, Phu Bai Brewery is not just a brewery, but also a model for the way Carlsberg develops, which is purposeful, responsible and creates sustainable value for Vietnam as well as globally.”
Accelerating the green journey, accompanying Vietnam towards Net Zero
The Phu Bai Brewery expansion project is in line with Carlsberg Group's global strategy Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB), and contributes positively to Vietnam's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The factory operates on renewable electricity certified by the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) combined with biomass energy, and all wastewater is treated with advanced filtration technology.
In 2024, Phu Bai Brewery will achieve a water efficiency of 2.09 hl/hl (hectolitres of water for each hectolite of finished beer), placing it among the top 10 water-efficient Carlsberg facilities in Asia and among the factories with the lowest water consumption in the Vietnamese beer industry. The factory is on track to achieve 2.0 hl/hl by 2026, while aiming to achieve zero landfill waste by the end of 2025 and net zero emissions in production by 2028.
By 2026, Carlsberg Vietnam also aims to achieve 100% reusable or recyclable packaging across all bottles, cans and kegs, further affirming its commitment to promoting a circular economy and innovating sustainable packaging in Vietnam.
