On October 6, Mr. Dau Duc Truyen - Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Hoa commune (Tuong Duong district, Nghe An) said that this morning, hundreds of students in the area returned to class after many days off due to storms and floods. However, the only bridge connecting 3 villages was washed away by floodwaters, forcing the authorities to mobilize police and military to use boats to take 209 students and 28 teachers across Huoi Nguyen stream to school.

From dawn, on the banks of the stream, groups of students were brought by their parents to the gathering point, waiting for the authorities to row them across the river. They wore life jackets, sat in small groups, and someone held a rope stretched across the water to ensure safety. On both banks, dozens of people were on duty to help students get on and off the boat.

Mr. Luong Van Tan (residing in Tat village) shared: “For the past week, my children have been absent from school to avoid the storm. Now the bridge has been washed away by floodwaters, so the only way to cross the stream is by boat. We are very worried, but we don’t want our children to miss out on their education.”

Hundreds of students were transported safely across the stream.

According to local authorities, the flash floods following Typhoon Bualoi caused severe damage. Trung Thang Bridge – a concrete bridge over 50m long – was swept away, isolating 312 households with 1,403 people in 3 villages Vang Lin, Xop Coc and Tat. In urgent situations, authorities had to build temporary rope bridges, use pulleys to transfer necessities and take sick people to the emergency room.

The school system was also severely damaged. Yen Hoa Secondary School, Yen Thang Kindergarten and Dinh Yen school were all covered in mud, with many books, desks, chairs and school supplies damaged. After many days of cleaning, the schools were able to reopen to students on the morning of October 6.

Authorities used boats and cables to bring students and teachers to school.

Mr. Bui Danh Vinh - Principal of Yen Thang Primary Boarding School - said: "We are in dire need of support in terms of books, blankets, clothes, and funds to repair tables, chairs, and the kitchen. We hope that benefactors will join hands to help teachers and students here overcome difficulties."

The Chairman of the People’s Committee of Yen Hoa Commune said that many students in isolated villages are not boarders, but the commune has asked the school to arrange temporary accommodation and meals for them to study with peace of mind. At the same time, the locality has assigned forces to stand guard on both sides of the Huoi Nguyen stream to transport people back and forth.

“In the immediate future, the commune will build a temporary iron bridge so that people can walk, waiting for a plan to build a new permanent bridge,” Mr. Truyen said.
