This is the first year Gia Lai province has had a contestant enter the final round of Olympia, Nguyen Quoc Nhat Minh - a student at Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted, Pleiku City.

Quenching the 24-year "thirst" of finding the way to the top of Olympia

At each final round of the Road to Olympia, the honor is not reserved for the contestants alone but spreads throughout the education sector of each locality.

For a province like Gia Lai that has a candidate entering the final round for the first time, that joy and pride is multiplied.

Ms. Le Thi Thu - principal of Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted - could not hide her emotions when in just a few days her favorite student would enter the race for the laurel wreath.

In the 24 years of the Road to Olympia program, the school has sent 24 excellent candidates. But the "thirst" continues as the best candidates only bring home second place in quarterly competitions.

Therefore, Ms. Thu confidently said that Nhat Minh's achievement of entering the final round of the year is not only the honor of the school but also of all students in the province.

Sharing about the preparations for the final round, Ms. Thu said that the school has been carrying out all the work for the past few months. The school has established an advisory board with talented and passionate teachers to help Minh improve his knowledge, practice his reflexes and communication skills.

The school also organized an art troupe that has been practicing hard over the past few weeks to perform and cheer up Minh on live television. At the same time, two teachers were sent to accompany Minh's family to Hanoi .

"The whole school worked together to prepare for this event. We, teachers and students, felt joy and pride when the television bridge was brought to Pleiku for the first time," Ms. Thu shared.

According to the principal, Minh has good inner strength but an introverted mentality and a calm personality. He is good at everything despite studying English and is very modest and secretive. Minh has given students in the province the belief that they can compete fairly with other regions in the country.

Good by self-study, watching news, reading newspapers

Before leaving for Hanoi, Minh was still diligently studying in his small house in Thong Nhat alley, Pleiku city. His mother, Nguyen Thi Hien, said that in addition to studying, he spent time playing sports and cycling to balance his emotions.

Minh's family advised him to stay calm and confident in entering the competition. Meanwhile, Minh's father, Nguyen Van Xuan, thanked the provincial leaders, the education sector, and the school for their care in preparing and accompanying him in this competition.

To encourage him, the whole family decided to go to Hanoi to cheer him on in person. Mr. Xuan said that this was an honor and pride for Minh and his family and clan.

Both parents are teachers, and Minh's innate talent from a young age helps him quickly absorb knowledge. Although he is a good student and achieves high results, it is noteworthy that he only studies by himself and does not take extra classes despite his parents' encouragement.

In the days leading up to the competition, Minh asked for leave from school to focus on reviewing some necessary knowledge. He said that the knowledge was vast, the competition not only tested academic knowledge but also knowledge from real life. Therefore, Minh updated himself through news programs, read more news in the newspaper to enrich his understanding.

"I'm not too worried, nor do I set any achievement goals to put pressure on myself, I just focus on performing my best and keeping my mind at ease" - Minh said.

It is known that among the 4 candidates who passed the quarterly exam to enter the final round, Minh was the candidate with the best score in the quarterly exam. However, you think that since you have reached the final round, all the opponents are very strong, so you are extremely cautious.

Minh's three opponents are Tran Trung Kien - Le Hong Phong High School, Phu Yen; Vo Quang Phu Duc - Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, Thua Thien Hue; Nguyen Nguyen Phu - Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted.

The pride of the provincial education sector

Mr. Tran Ba Cong - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province - said that the television broadcast of the final match in Gia Lai will be held at Dai Doan Ket Square, Pleiku City.

To prepare for this event, the education sector has been working since August 2024. Before Minh left, the school and the department held a meeting to encourage his spirit.

According to Mr. Cong, the first time a contestant from the province entered the final round of the year made the education sector very excited.

"Not only Minh and Hung Vuong School but also Gia Lai province is very proud to have students in the final round, bringing live television to the province. This event is very interested in students in the province, spreading the spirit of studiousness, overcoming difficulties and rising up" - teacher Cong confided.
