On October 10, Da Nang Hospital announced that it had just saved the life of an 18-year-old girl in critical condition after a traffic accident.

"Red alert" brings girl back from death's door

Accordingly, patient TNPU (18 years old, residing in Ba Na commune, Da Nang city) was transferred to Da Nang Hospital by the 115 Emergency Center in a lethargic state, with pale skin and mucous membranes, distended abdomen, chest and abdominal pain, deformed left arm, unmeasurable blood pressure, and undetectable peripheral pulse.

The emergency ultrasound results showed a large amount of blood in the abdomen. Recognizing this as a top emergency, the on-duty team immediately reported to the hospital leadership, activated the "internal red alert", mobilized all resources and took the patient straight to the operating room with the diagnosis: multiple trauma, closed abdominal trauma, closed chest trauma, left arm fracture, head and face trauma.

Within minutes, doctors and nurses from the departments of anesthesia, resuscitation, gastroenterology, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, and trauma surgery were present in the operating room.

The teams coordinate anesthesia, resuscitation, and surgery in parallel, performing many procedures at the same time.

According to Dr. Tran Van Nghia (Digestive Surgery Department, Da Nang Hospital), when opening the abdomen, the doctor discovered a series of severely damaged organs: grade IV spleen rupture, grade II liver injury, grade I left kidney injury, stomach rupture, small intestine rupture, colon rupture, and blood in the abdomen.

"We prioritize stopping bleeding as quickly as possible by performing splenectomy, liver suturing, wedge gastrectomy, and resection of the small intestine and colon using a Stapler to shorten the surgery time," said Dr. Nghia.

The surgery lasted nearly 5 hours, under conditions of continuous resuscitation and surgery to fight for every minute of life for the patient.

"This is an extremely complicated case, life is only measured in minutes. During the surgery, the patient had to be transfused with 10 units of blood and blood products, and high doses of vasopressors were used to maintain hemodynamics. Thanks to the smooth coordination between the teams, hemodynamics were stabilized right on the operating table," Dr. Nghia added.

Activating red alarm in time is the key to saving lives

According to Dr. Ha Phuoc Hoang - Deputy Head of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department of Da Nang Hospital, the key factor in saving the female student's life was the timely activation of the red alarm, along with good coordination between specialists, the extensive experience of the surgical - anesthesia team and the application of modern hemostasis techniques.

After surgery, the patient was put on a ventilator and intensive care in the surgical recovery room (anesthesia and resuscitation department). After 10 days of treatment, the patient's health condition improved significantly, and he was transferred to the digestive surgery department for further monitoring.

Currently, the female student is awake, eating and drinking normally, has stable vital signs and has been discharged from the hospital.
