Early season oranges cost double last year
In the first days of the 11th lunar month every year, on the hillsides of Thuong Loc commune, Can Loc district (Ha Tinh), the orange gardens are bright yellow and orange growers are busy harvesting the specialty crispy oranges after a year of care. Mr. Phan Cong Son's family in Nam Phong village (Thuong Loc commune) currently has more than 200 crispy orange trees that have been harvested, this year they are expected to harvest more than 10 tons of fruit. Mr. Son said that the price of crispy oranges has never been as high as this year, it is now the beginning of the season, the price is from 70,000 - 90,000 VND/kg, double that of last year.
According to Mr. Son, the crispy orange tree is resistant to cold, drought, and pests, especially it produces even fruit and does not crack the skin in all harsh weather conditions of the Central region. 1 crispy orange tree brings in 2-3 times more income than a normal orange tree. Therefore, this year his family has expanded the planting area to 300-500 new crispy orange trees.
On an area of nearly 5 hectares of hill garden, Ms. Bui Thi Thu's family (Thuong Loc commune) has planted many varieties of oranges such as lemon oranges, pomelos... but after experimenting with growing crispy oranges, Ms. Thu realized that this is the orange variety with the highest economic value. Currently, Ms. Thu's garden has more than 400 crispy orange trees that have been harvested, with an annual yield of 15 - 20 tons of fruit.

According to Ms. Thu, the wholesale price of early season oranges is currently quite high, from 70,000 VND or more, so this time her family has trimmed the ripe fruit, offered it to traders, and saved the rest for the Lunar New Year because the selling price will be even higher. Ms. Thu said that this year, thanks to favorable weather, along with organic and safe production, orange productivity has increased by about 20%, and quality has also increased. After deducting expenses, her family is estimated to earn nearly 1 billion VND.
"4 star cam" with sky high price

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoa, Director of Tra Son Cooperative, said that the Cooperative currently has 12 members with an area of over 15 hectares of oranges meeting 4-star OCOP standards. In addition, it also cooperates in production and consumption with 69 households growing oranges in communes in Tra Son (Can Loc district) with an area of over 100 hectares. Each year, the Cooperative supplies the market with over 500 tons of crispy oranges. At this time, the Cooperative sells 2-3 tons of crispy oranges to the market every day at a price of 90,000 VND/kg. During the New Year, the expected selling price is 120,000 VND/kg and during the Lunar New Year, the price can go up to 150,000 VND/kg.
Talking about the production process and building the Xuan Hoa crispy orange brand to stand firmly in the market with a selling price much higher than other types of oranges, Mr. Hoa enthusiastically shared: "To have clean products, our Cooperative produces according to a 100% organic process, only using microbial fertilizers, composted manure, and biological insecticides.

Ms. Phan Thi Hien, a long-time orange grower in Thuong Loc commune, said that crispy oranges are spherical, have smooth skin, are smaller than oranges and lemons, and when ripe, have a bright yellow skin. Crispy oranges have an average weight of about 250 - 350gr/fruit. In particular, when ripe, oranges have a rich, sweet taste and a very attractive aroma. When eaten, they feel cool and crispy. In addition, crispy oranges have a lot of water, few seeds, little fiber, and the pulp and juice are both yellow. Famous for its quality, beautiful appearance, and even fruit, Thuong Loc crispy oranges have been chosen as gifts for many years on holidays and Tet.

According to orange growers here, Thuong Loc crispy oranges were grown in Tra Son area (Can Loc district) nearly 20 years ago. Initially, crispy oranges were grown on a small scale, with small quantities and uneven quality. In recent years, realizing the superiority in quality and economic value of crispy oranges, and with the attention and support of all levels and sectors in Ha Tinh, the brand of crispy oranges of Thuong Loc has grown further and further. The scale of growing crispy oranges of Thuong Loc has been expanded much more than before and orange gardens have been invested more systematically in irrigation systems, fertilization and techniques. Therefore, the yield and quality of crispy oranges have increased significantly.

In particular, on January 9, 2017, the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology) issued Decision No. 1016/QD-SHTT dated on granting a certificate of protection for the "Thuong Loc Orange" certification trademark to the People's Committee of Can Loc district. Thanks to that, Thuong Loc crispy oranges have increasingly affirmed their position in the market inside and outside the province.
Mr. Nguyen Hai, Vice Chairman of Thuong Loc Commune People's Committee, said that this year, thanks to favorable weather and people's investment in proper care, the orange yield was high, the whole commune reached nearly 1,900 tons, bringing in tens of billions of dong in economic value. In particular, this year's orange season, the purchase price at the beginning of the season was much higher than previous years (lemon oranges cost 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, crispy oranges cost 60,000 - 90,000 VND/kg). This year, oranges have both a good harvest and good prices, so people are very excited. Orange trees have therefore become a crop that helps local people escape poverty, bringing in a decent income.

“To encourage and motivate people to plant new and replant oranges, the local government has provided support of 15,000 VND/tree for concentrated planting models of 50 trees or more to consolidate and develop the Thuong Loc orange brand and increase people's income,” the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuong Loc commune emphasized.
Currently, Thuong Loc commune has about 600 households growing oranges, lemons, and crispy oranges, mainly concentrated in Anh Hung, Thanh My, Nam Phong, and Son Binh villages with an area of over 200 hectares, of which the area for growing crispy oranges is over 120 hectares. This is also one of the localities with the largest orange acreage in Can Loc district.
