Preliminary investigations show that the suspect in the stabbing incident at a vocational school in Jiangsu province (China) on the evening of November 16 was a male student who failed the exam and did not receive a diploma.

Xinhua News Agency reported that a stabbing incident occurred on the evening of November 16 at a vocational school in Yixing city (Jiangsu province, China) leaving 8 people dead and 17 injured.

According to the Shanghai Daily , the incident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. (local time) at the vocational school. The suspect, a student surnamed Xu (21 years old), was arrested on the spot. The injured were taken to the emergency room.

A statement from Nghi Hung police cited preliminary investigation results showing that the male student returned to school to stab himself because he failed the exam and did not receive his diploma. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case.

In another development, CCTV on November 16 reported that Chinese police had officially detained a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, accused of driving his car into a crowd, killing 35 people and injuring 43 others.

The incident happened on the evening of November 11 when a driver drove his car into a crowd exercising outside a sports center in Zhuhai, a city in southern China.

Police said Mr. Pham was arrested at the scene, but was in a coma from the self-inflicted stab wound, making it impossible for investigators to question him.

"The Zhuhai People's Procuratorate has approved the arrest of Mr. Fan on suspicion of endangering public safety by dangerous means. The case is under further investigation," according to CCTV.

Police previously said a preliminary investigation showed Mr Pham's attack stemmed from his "dissatisfaction with the division of assets after the divorce".
