As the head of a locality with a high poverty rate, Mr. Nguyen Cong Cu - Head of Tan Son village (Ky Tho commune, Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh ) always worries about how to make a living for the people, and actively acts as a bridge for them to access policy capital sources to escape poverty sustainably.

Having served in the army for 10 years, upon returning to his hometown, Mr. Nguyen Cong Cu (born in 1961, Tan Son village, Ky Tho commune, Ky Anh district) always promoted the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, not afraid of hardships, and built a stable family life in a poor countryside.

In 2015, he was elected by the villagers to hold the position of Chief of Tan Son village with the hope of reviving the movement of the poorest village in the poor commune. Taking on the task in difficult conditions, what veteran Nguyen Cong Cu was most concerned about was the difficult life of the people here, the poverty rate was up to 16%, near-poor households 11%. Therefore, his number one priority was to do everything possible to arouse the awareness of rising out of poverty, solving the source of livelihood to reduce the poverty rate first.

In meetings, forums, and talks, the issue of poverty reduction is always mentioned and discussed by Village Chief Nguyen Cong Cu. To make people listen, agree, and support, he himself has been an exemplary leader in organizing family economic production. Although busy with village work, he and his wife have worked on 2 hectares of rice fields, 7 sao of peanuts, and raised nearly ten buffaloes and cows...

Along with propagating to people to change their way of thinking, working, and striving to develop production to escape poverty, he has encouraged people to actively participate in training sessions on farming techniques, mastering production and raising livestock.

Not only equipping people with awareness and ways of doing business, for many years, Village Chief Nguyen Cong Cu has always sought and taken advantage of livelihood support programs to help poor and near-poor households have capital to develop production and escape poverty.

In recent times, dozens of poor households in the village have been supported with livelihood models from sustainable poverty reduction programs; dozens of houses for poor households have been built to replace old, dilapidated houses. Thanks to being equipped with business knowledge, combined with support resources, many households have escaped poverty.

The family of Mr. Mai Van Hoang and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang has been poor for a long time, and their house is dilapidated. Faced with that situation, Mr. Cu encouraged the family to find a way out of poverty. However, Mr. Cu also determined that if people want to "settle down", they must first "settle down", so he found a way to connect so that the family could receive financial support to build a house.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang was moved: "With Mr. Cu's connection, we were supported with 50 million VND under the district's poverty reduction program to build a solid house. That amount of money, combined with the support of relatives and neighbors, helped us build a house worth more than 100 million VND. Together with 3 cows supported from previous livelihood sources, we had the conditions to develop the family economy, escape poverty and pay for our children's education. We are extremely grateful to Mr. Cu, the village chief."

With a new house and a source of livelihood, Ms. Hang's family has escaped poverty.

Like Ms. Hang's family, Ms. Le Thi Nghi - a single woman with especially difficult circumstances in Tan Son village was called and connected by Village Chief Nguyen Cong Cu to receive support of 70 million VND to build a house. Up to now, the house has been completed. Previously, Ms. Nghi was also called by Mr. Cu to support 15 million VND to buy a breeding cow and build a barn. Up to now, the cow has given birth to 3 calves, helping her have a source of income to stabilize her life.

“From a life of extreme hardship, thanks to the support of the village chief and the wholehearted help of the villagers, I now have a new life. After many years of hardship, thanks to the cadres who always care about the lives of the people, I have been able to change my life,” Ms. Nghi shared.

From a village with the highest poverty rate in the commune at 16%, Tan Son village has now reduced it to 0.4%; near-poor households have also decreased from 11% to 0.6%.

Ms. Le Thi Nghi's house was supported by the sustainable poverty reduction program with 70 million VND to build.

Village chief Nguyen Cong Cu shared: “As the closest cadre to the people, if I want to tell the people, I must first set an example, know how to sacrifice my own interests to help them rise up. Our people are still poor, they really need the cooperation of philanthropists and the community to have resources to develop production; at the same time, they need cadres who know how to care, share, advise, and support on how to do business... As long as the people still need me, I will still contribute.”

As a poor commune, where people's lives face many difficulties, we highly appreciate the role and responsibility of Village Chief Nguyen Cong Cu. He is a dedicated cadre with many effective methods in poverty reduction. This is also a typical factor for Ky Tho to spread, helping people have a foothold to escape poverty, contributing to completing the criteria in building a commune that meets advanced NTM standards in the coming time.
