Some social media accounts posted on Facebook that their family members in Le Thuy were starving and thirsty during the flood for many days, but when the government verified, it was not true. This kind of "cover-up" makes the government tired.
After several days of flooding, Le Thuy needs help, but "posting" the situation on social media is irresponsible - Photo: QUOC NAM
On the morning of October 30, a social media account named LTLN posted on his personal Facebook page a message asking for help to save his family in Uan Ao village (Lien Thuy commune, Le Thuy, Quang Binh ) who have been struggling due to flooding for the past 2 days.
This news article contains sentences that make the reader feel pity. "Is there any rescue team going to the Uan Ao area outside the ribit road, please give my aunt a cake and a bottle of water.
The water was up to the roof, and they had no food or water for 2 days and 2 nights. They were so hungry and weak that they fell ill. Their aunt and uncle's house was up to the roof but they couldn't call for help because there was no one in the area up there.
Below the post, this person also posted a photo of the location of the neighborhood where the family mentioned was located in the floodwaters.
The above distress call quickly spread on social media platforms. Many people also called on relief groups to quickly come and help this family.
The above information was quickly sent to the Lien Thuy commune authorities. Afterwards, Mr. Pham Van Linh, chairman of the People's Committee of Lien Thuy commune, although quite surprised because since the morning of the same day, the water had receded from most of the houses in the commune, and the mentioned area was not deeply flooded - but still immediately sent the vice chairman of the People's Committee of the commune and an officer to the location mentioned in the distress call to verify.
When Mr. Long, the vice chairman of the commune People's Committee, visited this person's house, the couple said that they were still normal and had been able to take control of their food supply for the past few days. The couple said that they were not hungry or cold as social media reported.
Asked about the person who posted the hunger rescue message on social media, the couple confirmed that it was their nephew, living in another village.
The commune authorities have asked the couple to contact their nephew to remove the above information.
"While the government has been working day and night all week to support flood victims, posting news like this makes it even harder for us to verify.
Not to mention many people think what the government is doing to let people starve in the flood like that. It may be a call for relief goods but it is irresponsible," Mr. Linh said.
