'Terrorist' bombing at Turkish Interior Ministry building

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that a terrorist bombing occurred on the morning of October 1 in the capital Ankara, right in front of the ministry's headquarters building. This area also has many ministries and parliament buildings, according to AFP.

One attacker was killed in the blast and another was “neutralised” by the authorities, a term often used to describe the killing of a target. Yerlikaya added that two police officers were slightly injured in the 9:30 a.m. bombing.

"Two terrorists arrived in a commercial vehicle in front of the entrance gate of the Ministry of Interior 's General Security Department at around 9:30 a.m. and carried out the bomb attack," the Ministry of Interior said.

Earlier, Turkish media reported that there was an explosion near the parliament and government buildings. Gunfire was heard in the area, while emergency services rushed to the scene. Bomb disposal squads also appeared and examined a car parked nearby. Television stations broadcast footage of debris strewn across the street near the Interior Ministry building.

Armored vehicles and troops were also present.

Soldiers, ambulances, fire trucks and armored vehicles appeared in the center of the capital while police blocked many roads near the scene.

The attack occurred as the Turkish parliament was about to open its new session after a summer break. The prosecutor general's office has launched an investigation into what it considers a terrorist attack. Authorities have not named any group behind the incident.

This is the latest in a series of attacks in Türkiye in recent years. In November 2022, an explosion in a crowded pedestrian street in Istanbul killed six people and injured 81. The Turkish government accused Kurdish armed forces of being behind the attack.
