OpenAI has just launched Sora 2, an upgraded version of the Sora AI application, OpenAI's new AI video social network.

In addition to the feature of creating videos from text, editing short videos with images and movements quite realistically according to the description provided by the user like the original version, Sora 2 has the ability to create sound and handle physics better.

Not only that, Sora 2 has been upgraded with the ability to recreate complex scenes such as jumping, skateboarding or flying. Technology experts consider this to be the most advanced AI video technology today.

Along with that, OpenAI "ambushed" social networks with the Sora app on iOS in the US and Canada.

The Sora app allows users to create, share, and view AI videos similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, with the highlight being the cameo feature. Users can register their face and voice data to insert themselves into AI videos, allowing friends to use this feature in shared videos.

Controversy arose when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's cameo was made public on the Sora app and a series of deepfake videos of his face appeared all over social media within 24 hours.

This unexpected situation turned OpenAI CEO into a "meme phenomenon" as well as turned Sora into a global deepfake production "factory".

Although it was only tested in the US and Canada, Sora's popularity has exploded to the point that Sora invitation codes are being sold all over eBay.

Sora 2: The pinnacle of technology or a deepfake machine?

There is no denying that the above phenomenon helped Sora "go viral" at a dizzying speed. However, many people expressed concern if a similar situation happened to politicians , celebrities, or influential people.

A question was raised, bringing with it many concerns and controversies: How does OpenAI handle it when influential people find themselves in situations like Mr. Sam Altman?

According to OpenAI, the Sora app operates similarly to other short video platforms such as TikTok, Meta Reels or YouTube Shorts, using algorithms to suggest content based on user habits.

The only difference is that Sora app is the first social network to focus entirely on AI video.

TechCrunch commented that Sora 2 is technically impressive in creating highly realistic footage. However, that is also the reason why Sora is easily abused to produce negative videos, serving bad purposes.

This consequence forced OpenAI to quickly come up with a safety control mechanism for users in the virtual world .

Notably, OpenAI is said to have exposed a contradiction in its development strategy when launching Sora. The company is determined to maintain its "human safety-first lab image" while also expanding into consumer products to find revenue. "We need capital to develop AI for science, but it's also good to create products that make people smile and solve operating costs," CEO Sam Altman shared.

Many experts and former OpenAI employees do not hide their skepticism about the tech company's goals.

Sora is technically impressive, but it’s too early to be confident that we can avoid the pitfalls of other social media platforms, says Professor Boaz Barak, an OpenAI researcher at Harvard University.

To date, US regulators have closely monitored OpenAI's move to a for-profit model.

While opening a new era for AI video, Sora also puts OpenAI at the center of controversy with many contradictions between the achievements it brings to the entertainment revolution and the unpredictable concerns of deepfake videos.
