Since the morning of September 1, on the central streets of Hanoi, environmental sanitation work has been deployed synchronously and urgently. Thousands of environmental workers and volunteer students are on duty day and night, mechanical vehicles operate continuously, trash cans and mobile toilets are scientifically arranged. Everything is ready for the Capital to enter the parade, march to celebrate the 80th anniversary of National Day September 2 in a bright - green - clean - beautiful appearance, leaving a good impression in the hearts of the people and international friends.
Proactive, urgent
Since dawn, thousands of environmental workers of the Hanoi Urban Environment Company (URENCO) and student volunteers have spread out to the streets of Hanoi. The steady sound of bamboo brooms mixed with the rumbling sound of mechanical sweepers has made the atmosphere of preparation even more urgent. At places expected to be crowded, such as Ba Dinh Square, along Dien Bien Phu Street, Kim Ma Street, Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Cat Linh Station..., the environmental sanitation force has been doubled compared to usual.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhung, Head of the environmental sanitation team in Ba Dinh ward, said that the people in the ward also accompanied the workers to clean up the trash early. Many families also proactively ordered free drinking water for the task force. In addition, the coordination work was closely deployed by the forces: Youth Union and volunteer students directly propagated, civil defense forces supported traffic flow, and ward authorities arranged officers to monitor each area. Hundreds of trash bag hangers were added, and makeshift toilets were evenly distributed to avoid congestion.
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Center for Agricultural Technology and Environment Nguyen Tan Cuong emphasized: “All scenarios for environmental sanitation for the parade have been carefully prepared. Even at locations expected to gather thousands of people, we have arranged more human resources, vehicles and added more public toilets. The goal is to keep the capital clean, beautiful, civilized, creating a good impression in the eyes of the people and international friends.”
According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Cuong, the rehearsal day on August 30 is an important test for the environmental sanitation force. In just a few hours, the amount of garbage generated in 13 central wards (4 old inner city districts) exceeded 1,500 tons, an increase of 22% compared to normal days. In Ba Dinh ward alone, the amount of garbage increased by 65%. To urgently clean up, the Center coordinated with URENCO Company to mobilize nearly 400 more workers from the Urban Environment Companies: Soc Son, Son Tay, Dong Anh (raising the total number of officers and workers participating in the task at A80 to about 3,000 people) and 70 motor vehicles, thousands of trash cans...
Thanks to that, only 60 minutes after the parade ended, most of the roads, streets and Ba Dinh Square area were cleaned. Some hot spots, such as Cat Linh Station, Hang Chao, Ton Duc Thang Street where a large number of people gathered to move back and forth, also completed the cleaning work in just 20 minutes.
URENCO Deputy General Director Nguyen Thanh Son shared: "Although the amount of garbage increased sharply, thanks to prior preparation, we implemented it urgently and synchronously, ensuring the streets were clean right after the event ended."
In addition, learning from the preliminary review, the technical staff of URENCO and the Hanoi Center for Agricultural and Environmental Technology added 53 mobile and field toilets to install in key areas, Cat Linh station, and roads with many people watching. The rescue team continuously pumped, supplied water, cleaned, contributing to maintaining a clean environment.
“Our workers started working from 4am. Although tired, everyone tried their best to complete the A80 task well, helping the capital to be clean and beautiful every hour,” Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son affirmed.
Determined to leave a good impression
In addition to the efforts of environmental workers, community awareness has also been increasingly improved. Many people bring small bags to hold trash and then put it in the bin; some even proactively collect trash into large bags and give them to workers. Ms. Nguyen Thu Van from Cau Giay Ward said that her group of friends had prepared plastic bags in advance to clean up after the parade rehearsal.
“These past few days, I have read many articles on social media calling on people to keep clean after the rehearsal. I think that patriotism is not just about shouting slogans, but also about loving every street corner and road. We should not leave behind bad images, so I invited my friends to stay and clean up together,” Ms. Nguyen Thu Van shared.
Sharing the same thought, Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh in Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam ward said: "We walked along the parade routes to clean up trash. This is also a way to show patriotism."
However, according to URENCO leaders, there are still some unsightly images on some streets, such as: Street vendors leaving plastic bags and plastic cups; some people sitting on tarps to eat and drink, causing a mess and losing the urban beauty; during rush hour from 5-6am, public restrooms are congested. These points have been brought to the attention of the city leaders so that service units can find solutions to fix them on September 2.
After the rehearsal, the city learned an important lesson: to be proactive - timely - effective in all situations. The city's People's Committee leaders directed environmental sanitation enterprises to increase workers, vehicles, trash cans, and mobile toilets; at the same time, step up propaganda to raise public awareness.
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Center for Agricultural Technology and Environment Nguyen Tan Cuong emphasized: “Keeping the environment clean is not only for the event, but also a way for us to promote the image of a civilized and modern Hanoi. This is an opportunity for international friends to see that the capital of a thousand years of culture is changing every day.”
Not only a logistical task, environmental sanitation has become an important political task, considered a part of the success of the parade. Every environmental worker, every ward official is aware that the cleanliness of every street corner, every square, is the image of the country in the eyes of international friends.
With high determination, Hanoi city aims to not only successfully organize the National Day Parade on September 2, but also leave a deep impression in the hearts of the people of the whole country and international friends about a bright - green - clean - beautiful, friendly city and worthy of being the heart of the whole country. This is also the premise for building a civilized and sustainable urban lifestyle - where each citizen becomes an "environmental ambassador" of the Capital.
