Global solar power grows by a record 30%+

A report released by energy research organization Ember on October 7 showed that global solar power capacity increased by a record 31% in the first half of the year, while wind power increased by 7.7%. Combined solar and wind power output increased by more than 400 TWh - larger than the increase in total global electricity demand in the same period.

The figures bolster hopes that the world can wean itself off polluting sources of electricity, even as demand for electricity soars, thanks to continued investment in renewables such as solar, wind, hydro, bioenergy and geothermal. This means renewables can keep up with the growth in electricity demand worldwide, said Małgorzata Wiatros-Motyka, senior analyst at Ember and lead author of the study.

Over the same period, total fossil fuel electricity production fell slightly, by less than 1%. “The overall decline in fossil fuels may be small, but it is significant,” said Wiatros-Motyka. “This is a turning point where we see emissions leveling off.”

Ember analyzed monthly data from 88 countries, representing the majority of global electricity demand. The increase in demand is driven largely by economic growth, the rise in electric vehicles and data centers, rising populations in developing countries, and increased cooling needs as global temperatures rise.

Ember's report focuses on China, India, the European Union (EU) and the United States, which together account for about 70% of global electricity production and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the power sector. China is leading the world in renewable energy development and has shown signs of easing its dependence on fossil fuels. Its fossil fuel electricity production fell by 2%, leading to a reduction in emissions. India recorded record growth in solar and wind power, outpacing demand growth. India's fossil fuel production and emissions also fell.

Analysts often say renewable energy doesn’t actually lead to a reduction in fossil fuel use, but this report highlights an encouraging step in the opposite direction, said Michael Gerrard, founder and director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University.

In the US, however, growth in electricity demand has outpaced growth in clean energy capacity. Meanwhile, in the EU, stagnant wind and hydropower production has led to increased coal and gas generation. As a result, both markets have seen an increase in fossil fuel generation, leading to higher emissions.
