The AFC Champions League Elite (AFC C1) became complicated when Shandong Taishan (China) unexpectedly withdrew from the tournament right before the final round of the qualifying round. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as well as Shandong Taishan's opponents were in turmoil.

Shandong Taishan FC posted a statement explaining their decision to withdraw from the tournament. The Chinese team said their players had "serious health problems". Shandong Taishan's medical team confirmed that the team did not have enough players to compete.
