Vietnam successfully hosted the ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Sports in October 2024.

This is a leading event in the field of regional sports, where member countries discuss cooperation directions, share experiences and propose strategic solutions, with the main theme: Orientation of sports to contribute to sustainable development.

The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS) was first held in 2011 in Indonesia and has established itself as a biennial high-level forum for the region.

After more than a decade, AMMS has become an important cooperation mechanism, helping to link policies and actions, as well as build consensus in sports development among ASEAN countries.

According to the rotation mechanism, in 2025, Vietnam will officially take on the role of host of AMMS-8 and organize related conferences, including the 5th ASEAN + Japan Ministerial Meeting (AMMS + Japan 5) and the 2nd ASEAN + China Ministerial Meeting (AMMS + China 2).

During the eight days in Hanoi , the conference is not only a place to discuss policies but also a meeting place to enhance friendship, understanding and cooperation within the ASEAN community.

At the conference, many important issues will be raised, from developing professional sports associated with sports science and economics to enhance international competitiveness, to promoting gender equality and encouraging the participation of women, youth and people with disabilities.

The conference also highlighted the preservation and promotion of traditional sports associated with ASEAN culture and identity, along with a plan to establish an ASEAN High Performance Sports Centre to create an environment for training, professional exchange and raising the level of regional athletes.

In recent times, Vietnamese sports have also made a strong impression in the regional arena.

Another key content is promoting the role of sports in improving public health, linking with the millennium development goals and sustainable development. It is expected that the conference will adopt three joint statements: AMMS-8 Joint Statement, AMMS+Japan Joint Statement 5 and AMMS+China Joint Statement 2. At the same time, the reports of SOMS-15, SOMS-16 and the post-2025 cooperation plan will also be reviewed and approved.

In particular, AMMS-8 marked a step forward in expanding cooperation between ASEAN and partners outside the region. Specific cooperation plans were discussed, such as with Japan in the fields of women's sports development, physical education, sports for the disabled and sustainable development through football.

Or with China in improving public health, building ASEAN sports zones and developing traditional sports. Besides, ASEAN also expands cooperation with Korea, FIFA, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and Regional Anti-Doping Organization (SEARADO).

Vietnam’s hosting of AMMS-8 not only demonstrates Vietnam’s prestige and active role in the ASEAN community, but is also an opportunity to introduce the image of the country, people and culture of Vietnam to international friends. At the same time, this event will contribute to promoting the sustainable development of Vietnamese sports and deeper integration with the region and the world.

The 8th ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting in Hanoi is expected to be an important milestone, affirming the spirit of solidarity, cooperation and common development aspirations of regional sports, while opening up new directions for the future of ASEAN sports in the period of sustainable development.
