That is the assessment of the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) in its latest report.
International tourist arrivals worldwide are expected to increase by 5% year-on-year in 2024, up about 4% from pre-pandemic levels. Nearly 690 million international tourists are expected to travel between January 2025 and June 2025, up about 33 million from last year.
In that context, Japan and Vietnam are the two destinations with the best results with impressive growth (21%).
According to the General Statistics Office, the number of international visitors to Vietnam in the first 6 months of 2025 reached nearly 10.7 million, an increase of 21% over the same period in 2024, and 25.7% higher than the same period in 2019 before the pandemic.
UN Tourism recorded positive growth in almost all regions. In order, Africa grew by 12%, Europe welcomed nearly 340 million visitors, up 4% compared to 2024. South America stood out with a growth of 14%, while North America and the Caribbean remained almost unchanged.
The Middle East is the region that recorded a decline in growth after a period of strong recovery (-4%). However, this growth rate is still 29% higher than in 2019.
The Asia- Pacific region grew by 11%, but still only recovered to 92% of pre-COVID-19 levels.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that both international air traffic and international air traffic capacity in the first half of 2025 increased by 7% compared to the same period in 2024. In addition, the global hotel room occupancy rate reached 69% in June 2025, and 71% in July 2025. According to the UN Tourism Expert Panel survey in September 2025, the increase in transportation and accommodation costs remain the two major challenges affecting international tourism. Therefore, tourists tend to choose closer destinations, take shorter trips or spend more economically.
At the same time, economic instability and geopolitical tensions around the world can negatively affect international tourism.
According to the survey, low confidence was ranked third in terms of its impact on tourism activities, while geopolitical risks ranked fourth.
Other factors that can be mentioned are trade tariffs (ranked 5th), and travel and tourism requirements (ranked 6th).
Despite many uncertainties, UN Tourism still maintains its forecast for global tourism growth of 3-5% in 2025.
