Ghana is a beacon of hope for the region

On October 31, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirmed Ghana's role in the West African security situation, while providing equipment and training to help repel terrorist forces in the region.

The German leader said that a series of recent coups in West African countries had hindered cooperation between countries, and that the government could even fall into the hands of rebels.

In addition, Chancellor Scholz stressed the importance of the process of restoring “democratic order” and assessed Ghana as a “beacon of hope” for the region and a close partner of Germany.

He affirmed that Berlin is ready to support cross-border cooperation and the EU can provide equipment and training.

Not only that, Germany also pledged 81 million Euros to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address security, infrastructure and climate change issues in the region.

West Africa is grappling with security turmoil that began in Mali in 2012 and spread across the Sahel region, killing thousands and displacing more than 6 million people.

Jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) have expanded their operations into the Gulf of Guinea, attacking northern coastal countries such as Benin, Ghana and Togo. The rise of military governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Gabon since 2020 has further increased instability.
