Teachers move from 'knowing everything' to 'knowing a lot'

Vietnamese education is changing. The teacher in the classroom is no longer the one with absolute power. The classroom is no longer silent, only the teacher's voice is heard.

After 5 years of innovation of the 2018 General Education Program, although there are still shortcomings and issues that need to be discussed, it must be understood that the educational scene has improved, had positive changes and gradually entered the orbit of modern education, especially approaching advanced education in the world.

In the new General Education program, the form of learning hours is not uniform and has changed towards individualization. Group learning is quite popular in many schools.

The old teaching purpose of transmitting information has been replaced by training information processing capacity, that is, the capacity to think, analyze, and interpret information for students. With the new program, although not uniform in all places, the study hours have changed, according to the goal of developing students' qualities and capacities, that is, learning through doing, through creative experiential activities. This can be considered a fundamental change in the foundation of innovative education.

Classes are not uniform and are more individualized. Group learning is common in many schools. Students sitting at the front desk turn around to study with students sitting at the back desk.

Many teachers have prepared lessons based on at least two teaching materials, that is, based on the content of two textbooks by different authors. Class hours will not be the same but will depend on the learners and there will be different lesson plans. The absoluteness of teaching materials in the old way will no longer exist.

The teacher in the class is no longer the one with absolute power. The class is no longer silent, only the teacher's voice, following the teacher's orders. Students are allowed to move around the class to participate in activities, give feedback on their own opinions when learning the lesson, and exchange their own opinions in an organized manner during practice or experiential activities.

Teachers have changed. They can evaluate their own lessons from the perspective of whether students really understand the lesson. This is a big event that completely changes the way teachers have viewed lessons. Teachers have given up their "pride" and look back on their lessons with more humility.

Teachers have changed from the mindset of "knowing everything" to "there are many things they don't know" so they have to learn gradually in their educational activities for students and colleagues. The commitment to digitalization, digital transformation, and the application of artificial intelligence is proof that many teachers across the country have experienced and have made strong changes.

However, the change of teachers depends largely on the principal. With the new general education program, the principal should not be a manager but a leader of the teaching staff and a school administrator. Perhaps this is a breakthrough change in the ranks of principals in many general schools.
