On October 1, Google announced that it is integrating its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant into the company's smart home devices, allowing users to control them using natural language.
In an online post, Google stated that the new Gemini for Home feature will replace the Google Assistant virtual assistant, the previous system used to manage home appliances produced by the American technology giant.
The new feature will apply to all Google displays, speakers, cameras and doorbells sold in the past 10 years. The company believes that the demand for these devices will increase thanks to the ability to receive commands in natural language more easily than using fixed phrases.
Google also posted a video illustrating a user asking the smart speaker to find a recipe based on available ingredients, then asking the AI assistant to change the dish immediately.
Gemini can maintain the context of a conversation so users can chat back and forth without having to repeat information. Google aims to have Gemini integrated into other smart device manufacturers' products as well.
Many other major tech companies are pushing to incorporate AI into smart home products.
On September 30, Amazon "launched" a new line of smart speakers, Echo, equipped with an upgraded version of the virtual assistant Alexa+, promising to bring users a smoother and more convenient experience.
OpenAI is also teaming up with former Apple design chief Jony Ive to launch a new device, while the iPhone maker is said to be working on a smart display on a robotic arm that can rotate and reposition to track users in a room./.
