Two consecutive accidents, Trung Luong highway jammed for 10 km

Long An: Two consecutive collisions damaged 6 vehicles, injured two people, and caused a traffic jam of about 10 km on the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong highway on the afternoon of March 7.

At around 3:30 p.m., a 7-seat car with a HCMC license plate driven by a 39-year-old driver was traveling on the HCMC-Trung Luong Expressway toward the city. While passing through Thanh Phu Commune, Ben Luc District, the car was hit by a truck behind it, then collided with a tanker truck, causing a chain reaction accident.

The accident left two people with minor injuries. The front of the 7-seater car was crushed under the rear of the tanker truck, causing it to be crumpled and deformed. The rear of the tanker truck was dented and severely damaged, with debris scattered on the road.

While the authorities were handling the collision, about 6 km away, in My Yen commune (Ben Luc), an accident occurred between a container truck, a truck and a 7-seater car. The accident did not cause any casualties, but damaged three vehicles.

The two incidents simultaneously caused a traffic jam of nearly 10 km on the highway, and it took police more than two hours to clear the scene. The highway management unit said the road surface at the accident site was smooth and the signage system was complete.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway is nearly 62 km long, has 4 lanes, and has been in operation since 2010, with a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Five years ago, the expressway stopped collecting tolls, but the number of vehicles increased by over 30%, reaching 40,000-50,000 vehicles per day, causing the road surface to be overloaded, damaged, and prone to accidents.

In the middle of last year, the expressway was proposed to be expanded to 8 lanes, including 2 emergency lanes, with a total investment of nearly 10,000 billion VND, expected to be completed in 4 years. The proposal was approved by the Government under the form of public-private partnership (PPP).
