Two consecutive explosions in Iran: The number of victims exceeded 100 people

According to Iran's official IRNA news agency, the death toll increased due to the serious injuries of those who died after two explosions occurred near a cemetery where a memorial service was being held for senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in 2020, about 1km away.

Another 141 people were injured, some of them in critical condition, IRNA said. An unnamed official said two explosive devices had been placed along the road leading to the cemetery and detonated remotely.

Rescuers are tending to the injured and evacuating them from the area, but the work is being hampered by the fact that all roads leading to the area are blocked.

No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Authorities say it was a terrorist attack and are investigating.

Previously, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network (IRINN), the first explosion occurred at 3:04 p.m. local time (6:34 p.m. Vietnam time) and the second explosion occurred a few minutes later.

Preliminary information said the cause of the explosions was still unknown and authorities had sent rescue teams to the scene. Most of the injuries were due to the crowd and panic when the explosions occurred.

The head of the IRGC's Quds Force, Major General Qasem Soleimani, was killed in an airstrike targeting his convoy at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on January 3, 2020.
