Super typhoon Ragasa affects economic activities in Asia
In China, Guangdong province - the country's manufacturing and technology capital - has raised its storm warning to level 1 - the highest level on the warning scale, with more than 10 cities closing all factories, commercial areas and public transport. Meanwhile, in the special administrative region of Hong Kong (China), many essential items such as milk, meat and vegetables have sold out or increased in price due to people hoarding food. Most businesses have also temporarily suspended operations, but the stock exchange can still conduct transactions.
The aviation industry is one of the sectors most affected by Ragasa. Major airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Qatar Airways have cancelled hundreds of flights to and from Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen international airports in the coming days.
Cathay Pacific, based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China), has been directly and heavily affected. Cathay Pacific has announced the suspension of all flights to and from Hong Kong International Airport until September 25. A spokesperson for the airline said that more than 500 flights are expected to be canceled. To support passengers, the airline will waive all booking, itinerary and refund fees for all flights between September 23 and 25.
Similarly, Dubai-based airline Emirates has cancelled all flights from Dubai to Hong Kong until September 25. Flights between Dubai and Shenzhen (China) have also been cancelled on September 23 and 24. In addition, short-haul services between Hong Kong and Bangkok have also been suspended. Emirates has specifically noted that it will not accept passengers transiting through Dubai with final destinations in Hong Kong and Shenzhen until further notice.
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways has also cancelled all flights between Doha and Hong Kong. Its cargo services from Doha to Hong Kong, Macau Special Administrative Region (China) and Shenzhen have also been affected. Qatar Airways said it is actively assisting affected passengers and advised people to check their flight status on its official information channels before going to the airport.
