Limit the abandonment of summer-autumn rice fields

QTO - Many years ago, the situation of abandoning summer-autumn rice crops in Quang Tri province was quite common in many localities. This summer-autumn crop, with the strong direction of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, localities have focused on building a chain of links in production and product consumption, thereby limiting the situation of abandoned fields.

This summer-autumn crop in Ninh Chau commune, Quang Binh Agricultural Corporation has implemented production linkage on an area of 120 hectares. This is an annual area that only produces winter-spring rice, not summer-autumn rice. When participating in the model, mechanization is applied in all stages of the production process from land preparation to harvesting. Especially, drones are used in sowing and fertilizing. Mr. Truong Van Le, Minh Trung Cooperative, Ninh Chau commune, Quang Tri province said that when participating in this model, people are very excited because the amount of rice produced is bought by the enterprise right in the field, without being forced to lower the price, and the productivity is high.

In addition to Ninh Chau commune, this summer-autumn crop, Quang Binh Agricultural Corporation has deployed production on 120 hectares in Quang Ninh commune. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky - Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Quang Binh Agricultural Corporation said that the initial wish of the enterprise and farmers was to achieve a yield of about 5 tons/hectare, but currently the yield is about 6 tons/hectare, exceeding expectations.

According to him, on an area of land that does not produce summer-autumn crops, achieving such high productivity is very successful. “In fact, on this land, there was only one crop before, this is the first crop we have cooperated in production. At first, farmers were very worried, but we were determined to implement it to affirm that success not only brings benefits to farmers but also economic efficiency to society. We invest in fertilizers, seeds, techniques and when harvesting, we buy them back. With the current price, after deducting costs, farmers still earn a profit of 15-20 million VND/hectare” – Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky added.

Holding heavy rice grains in his hands, Mr. Bui Phuoc Trang, Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province, said that every year in the province, there are about 6,000-7,000 hectares of land that do not produce the summer-autumn crop. From the results of this association, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province will advise the Department of Agriculture and Environment to continue to replicate the model in the coming time, and at the same time, promote information and propaganda to replicate this model in the summer-autumn crop of 2026, limit abandonment, ensure food security, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the locality.
