Thousands of students in Ho Chi Minh City compete in math competitions on handheld calculators

(Dan Tri) - More than 2,000 students in Ho Chi Minh City participated in the Ho Chi Minh City-level math competition for gifted students using handheld calculators in the 2024-2025 school year in 5 subjects.

The opening ceremony of the 31st Ho Chi Minh City-level Math Competition for Excellent Students on Handheld Calculators for the 2024-2025 school year, organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, took place on January 5 at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School.

This year’s exam attracted nearly 2,200 excellent students from nearly 250 secondary and high schools in 21 districts and Thu Duc city. Before entering the city-level exam, the candidates had passed the selection rounds at school and district levels.

The city-level round recorded students' competition in 5 subjects including middle school math and high school math - physics - chemistry - biology.

The contest will award 1,300 prizes to contestants with high achievements in first, second and third places.

The first computer math competition for gifted students was held in Ho Chi Minh City in 1995. From a city-level competition, the competition has spread to 63 provinces and cities across the country and has been held at the national level.

One of the new points of this year's exam is the seminar sharing experience between subject teachers and teachers training the team.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that this year the math competition for gifted students using handheld calculators with the 2018 General Education Program is completely new.

The exam has something more unusual, students can not only use logical thinking in math, chemistry, physics, biology but also need many skills and thinking to solve logical thinking problems, practical problems to find the correct answer.

The Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City also shared that any contest has competition and requires effort in studying. The results of the contest can be joy or sadness, but these will be useful experiences for the learning process of students.
