Good or bad depends on the teacher

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/11/2023

A fascinating subject

In the past, in high school, we studied geography from secondary school. This subject in high school if the teacher taught well, it was especially interesting.

Geographical knowledge not only helps students understand their own country but also gives them the opportunity to understand the world . In the past, global knowledge was not as broad as it is now, so students wanted to approach the world through school subjects.

I remember, when I was in grade 6 at Southern School, the geography teacher gave a homework assignment related to world geography . The students had to do it at home for a week and then submit it to the teacher for grading.

The topic is very broad, allowing students to imagine, acquire and demonstrate their personal knowledge of world geography . The topic requires the following: "Write about a trip by any means of transport to geographical regions in the world, and describe that trip."

Geography is especially interesting if the teacher teaches it well.

We students are free to imagine and integrate the world geography knowledge we have learned, expressing it in a writing style full of " backpacking " like young people often express after each backpacking trip. And this is "backpacking the whole world", of course, with imagination.

The teacher is an important factor

In my opinion, the teacher's creativity in giving geography test questions makes this subject especially interesting.

At Chu Van An High School ( Hanoi ), we studied geography with Mr. Suu. He was a temporary geography teacher at Chu Van An School from the time Hanoi was temporarily occupied by the French colonialists. He had a wide range of knowledge and taught this subject very attractively. During the geography class, Mr. Suu always developed the lesson with knowledge "outside the textbook" and that "additional" knowledge made us students very excited.

When teaching about American geography, about black slaves, about the Mississippi River, Mr. Suu sang in English for us students a blues song of black slaves pulling boats on the Mississippi River. The song was so beautiful and sad that generations of students who learned geography from Mr. Suu remembered this lesson for almost their entire lives.

Back then, we didn't study or know English, but the song that Mr. Suu sang for us still moved us every time we talked about geography.

So, textbooks are not everything, but the teacher is important for the subject's appeal.

Geography lessons like these can be remembered by students for the rest of their lives. And who knows, among those students, there may be those who will later be inspired to go deeper into geography research or work in the tourism industry.

Therefore, integrating geography with history is unnecessary. Each subject has its own objectives, its own knowledge, and its own ability to attract and delight students.

The important thing is how teachers and students approach teaching and learning these two subjects. If teachers teach well and students are inspired to learn about these two subjects, beyond the knowledge of textbooks, the integration of knowledge for students will increase greatly.
