Turkey's Ahaber channel reported on October 11 that a delegation of negotiators from Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK arrived in Turkey to begin technical talks, expected to last for three weeks.

With plans to buy 40 Eurofighter jets, Turkey negotiated the deal with Britain and Spain last year, and then reportedly with London's help convinced Germany, which is reluctant to sell weapons to countries with poor rule of law and human rights records.

In May 2024, the Bulgarian Military website reported that in an interview, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler affirmed that Ankara is still "interested" in the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft jointly developed by the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy.

However, there are "some issues" on which Germany and Türkiye - two members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - still disagree.

According to Anadolu news agency, Ankara wants to buy 40 Eurofighter aircraft, which are advertised as multi-role fighters capable of "simultaneously providing air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities", and can carry Paveway IV laser-guided bombs and many types of missiles such as: Meteor, AMRAAM, ASRAAM, IRIS-T, Storm Shadow, Brimstone...

Forbes magazine quoted Professor Ali Bakir at Qatar University (Doha, Qatar), who is also a senior researcher at the Atlantic Council, as saying that Turkey wants to buy Eurofighter planes to diversify its arsenal and reduce its dependence on supplies from the US.

In addition, purchasing modern fighter jets such as the Eurofighter could be Ankara's "temporary solution" to "bridge the technology gap" until the 5th generation domestic fighter KAAN is officially delivered.

In addition, this deal will be a test of the possibility of military cooperation between Turkey and the European Union (EU).

According to Forbes , the export of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft requires the consent of the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy.
