The ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Sports over the past seven years has helped shape the future of regional sports (Pictured is the torch relay at the 32nd SEA Games, to be held in Cambodia in 2023)

From AMMS-1 (2011) to AMMS-7 (2023), this mechanism has gradually shaped the regional sports cooperation “ecosystem”, from sports for health, social inclusion to improving peak performance and international integration.

Right from AMMS-1 (Yogyakarta, 2011), the Ministers agreed to establish a cooperation framework and assigned the Senior Officials Meeting on Sports - SOMS (Senior Officials Meeting on Sports) to concretize the action plan.

Two years later, AMMS-2 (Vientiane, 2013) adopted the Vientiane Declaration on ASEAN Sports Cooperation, which for the first time affirmed sports as a driving force for community bonding, promoting health, equality and inclusion.

AMMS-3, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2015, shifted its focus to the practical implementation of the work plan and connection with ASEAN pillars after the establishment of the ASEAN Community in December 2015.

AMMS-4, held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in 2017, emphasized the role of sports in social cohesion and people-to-people exchanges. AMMS-5, held in Manila, Philippines in 2019, proposed to strengthen cooperation in major events, promote gender equality and youth; and noted the idea of cooperation related to world-class tournaments.

In the context of the tense Covid-19 pandemic, AMMS-6 was organized by Singapore in an online format in 2021. This conference reaffirmed the safe, sustainable recovery of sports in line with the SDGs, and expanded cooperation with Japan/China through the AMMS+Japan/AMMS+China mechanism.

Meanwhile, the most recent ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-7) hosted by Thailand in Chiang Mai in 2023 updated the focus on digital transformation, sports integrity, talent development and the “sports for all” agenda.

After 7 successful editions, AMMS has established its goal axis: community health and integration; improving performance and governance capacity; international linkage and sustainable development. This is the foundation for the host country Vietnam - the host country of AMMS-8 this October - to move towards the theme of sustainable development.
