The album Hon Viet includes 15 songs with three main themes: national heroes (The sound of the drums of Me Linh, The flag of reeds, Saint Tran, General of Ly Dynasty, Emperor in cloth); legends - history (The story of Co Loa citadel, Dong A spirit, Thang Long spirit, Bach Dang River...) and fairy tales (Son Tinh - Thuy Tinh, Thach Sanh, Truong Chi - My Nuong, Banh Chung - Banh Giay).
I consider this as a musical work of my life. Through the album Hon Viet, I want to awaken the love of Vietnamese history and national pride in every Vietnamese person through familiar melodies and lyrics.
Musician Hoai An
According to musician Hoai An, Hon Viet also praises traditional values of Vietnamese culture and people, history of building and defending the country, beautiful words and meanings through folk songs and proverbs.
The first song in this album was written by Hoai An in 2000, titled Truyen thuy Co Lo a, and Hoang de ao vai is the latest composition (2023).
Hoai An said the most difficult thing for the musician when making this album was the historical documents because there were numbers, events, and characters that did not match between sources. He had to research many sources, compare until he had enough information before starting to write.
Releasing the album as a physical CD instead of online, Hoai An explained: "I'm someone who likes the traditional style, holding the album in my hand still has more feeling and meaning.
On the other hand, CD albums are still a standard form of release, a meaningful cultural gift. I also provide QR codes to download digital music files and plan to release Hon Viet online via karaoke, lyric clips or MV."
Contributing to the album are more than 20 singers such as Vo Ha Tram, Doan Dai Hoa, Duong Ngoc Ha, Luu Hien Trinh, Tran Huu Kien, Duy Linh, Nha Thy, Ho Thao Nguyen, Kim Ngoc, Khanh Hue , Cong Quoc, Cadillac backing group, and New Day choir.
Also participating are traditional music artists such as Hai Phuong (zither), Thu Thuy (erhu), Hoai An (guitar, pipa, jew's harp), Cao Minh Bao (guitar), Dat Kim (zither), Minh Phat (monochord) and Dinh Nhat Minh (flute). The music and arrangement are by musicians Ly Huynh Long, Dat Kim and Minh Dang, bringing many musical colors to Hon Viet.
Hoai An said that after releasing the album Hon Viet, if possible, he will continue to write this genre of music to arouse national pride.
According to Hoai An, he has written about 800 songs so far, most of which have been released. Although he always has new songs when he sits down to write, he always determines that when he writes, there must be new elements in the music or lyrics, so he only writes when he feels inspired.
"For me, each song is a story - with an introduction, body, conclusion, and a clear message. If listeners feel they are part of the story, the song will be easily popularized. I prioritize beautiful, smooth melodies, and only use impressive transitions in a few songs," musician Hoai An shared.
