Today is the 47th US presidential election.

Today (November 5) the 47th US Presidential election takes place, with about 170 voters participating in the vote to choose between Mr. Donald Trump and Ms. Kamala Harris.

Three towns in New Hampshire state including Dixville Notch, Hart's Location and Millsfield are the first places to open for people to vote from 0:00 on November 5 (12:00, Hanoi time).

Most polling places across the United States will open from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on November 5, depending on the different time zones across the country. Polling stations close from 6 p.m. to midnight, Eastern time.

Results are expected to begin to be announced when polling stations begin to close at around 6 p.m. Eastern time (6 a.m. November 6, Hanoi time).

The tradition of holding the US presidential election on the first Tuesday of November dates back to 1845. This decision was made by Congress when the US was still a predominantly agricultural society. By scheduling the election after the fall harvest, farmers could conveniently travel to polling places, which were often located far from their homes. This timing and tradition have remained to this day.

The 2020 election saw Senator Kamala Harris join President Joe Biden’s campaign as the first woman of color and the first South Asian to be nominated for vice president by a major national party. Her eventual victory was a landmark achievement, marking the first time a woman of color has served as vice president of the United States.

Now, as the Democratic nominee for the top job, she could make history again, potentially becoming the first female US president and the first woman of color to hold the office. Harris picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate, who could bolster Harris' campaign with voters in key Midwestern states.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump is trying to return to the White House after losing to Joe Biden in 2020. However, Mr. Trump's path is full of unprecedented legal and political obstacles.

He is the first US president, former or current, to face criminal charges. Despite these controversies, Mr. Trump remains a major figure in the Republican Party, promising to “Make America Great Again.” Mr. Trump chose Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate. Mr. Vance is an outspoken conservative and author who is popular with rural and working-class voters.
