Agreement allows Huawei and Xiaomi to use each other's patents

Huawei and Xiaomi's global patent cross-licensing agreement covers a wide range of communications technologies, including 5G. The deal will play a key role in upcoming devices from both brands.

The question is, what does this global cross-licensing agreement between Huawei and Xiaomi mean? Huawei was previously the world's leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer. In addition, Huawei is one of the major players in the smartphone market. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is the world's third largest smartphone manufacturer.

That means Huawei will have the right to provide some of the patents that make Xiaomi phones even better. With access to Xiaomi's patents, Huawei will be motivated to develop new products and services. And Xiaomi will no longer have to pay patent licensing fees to Huawei for using their leading communications technology.

Furthermore, this cross-licensing agreement will help both companies develop 5G products and services. Although the brands did not disclose the terms, it will likely take effect early next year, with the agreement lasting 10 years. After that, the two companies can negotiate a new contract or extend the contract.
