Rare female patient has more than 100 gallstones in her gallbladder

(Dan Tri) - A female patient in Quy Nhon Nam ward, Gia Lai province had to undergo emergency surgery to remove more than 100 gallstones from her gallbladder. Doctors said this was a rare case.

On August 18, specialist doctor Nguyen Quoc Kha, Deputy Head of the General Surgery Department, Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital, said that the team of doctors in this department had successfully performed a rare laparoscopic gallbladder surgery with nearly 100 gallstones removed.

The patient is Ms. DTNT (54 years old, residing in Quy Nhon Nam ward, Gia Lai province).

According to Dr. Kha, Ms. T. was admitted to the emergency room because of severe pain in the right hypochondrium, high fever, and continuous vomiting. CT scan results showed that the patient had necrotizing cholecystitis, infection with high white blood cells, and emergency surgery was indicated.

The surgery was performed by doctors Nguyen Quoc Kha, Nguyen Xuan Hiep and Cao Trung Hau.

The surgical team assessed that the biggest difficulty of this case was that the gallstone was stuck in the neck of the gallbladder, causing necrosis. At the same time, the gallbladder was surrounded by surrounding organs, so the risk of damage was high.

Thanks to close coordination, rhythm and high level of expertise, the team successfully performed the surgery, helping the patient overcome the critical condition.

In particular, after opening the gallbladder, the doctors were surprised by the number of stones contained in the patient's gallbladder. In total, the surgeon removed more than 100 yellow stones from the patient's gallbladder.

Doctor Kha added that the patient discovered he had gallstones when he went to a lower level hospital for examination, but subjectively did not treat it completely.

“People with symptoms of right lower abdominal pain, jaundice, and yellow eyes need to have regular health check-ups to detect gallstones and bile duct stones early for timely treatment. If treatment is delayed, the disease can lead to septic shock, sepsis, and even be life-threatening,” Dr. Kha warned.
