Indonesia may grant dual citizenship to attract foreign workers

Việt NamViệt Nam02/05/2024

The Indonesian government may grant dual citizenship to people of Indonesian descent to attract more skilled workers into the country.

The Indonesian government plans to grant dual citizenship to former Indonesian citizens living abroad, according to Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan.

Speaking ahead of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s pledge to invest $1.7 billion in Indonesia, Luhut said he would invite the Indonesian diaspora and offer them dual citizenship. This would help bring talented Indonesians back to the country. According to data from Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration, nearly 4,000 Indonesians became Singapore citizens between 2019 and 2022.

The Indonesian immigration agency has yet to comment on this information.

The dual citizenship issue caused some controversy in 2016 when President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo removed Arcandra Tahar from his position as energy and mining minister less than a month into his tenure. It was reported at the time that Arcandra Tahar had both US and Indonesian citizenship.

Under current regulations, Indonesia does not recognize adults with dual citizenship, and children with two passports must choose one passport and give up the other when they turn 18.
