While the tech world is following Apple’s every move with the iPhone 17 series expected to launch in September 2025, one name that has aroused a lot of curiosity is the iPhone 17 Air – a version positioned as “super thin – super light – different”. However, that fashionable design comes with an inevitable problem: modest battery capacity.

Smaller battery – trade-off for slim design

According to supply chain sources and analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 Air will be just 5.5mm thick, making it the thinnest iPhone ever. However, to achieve this, Apple was forced to cut the battery capacity down to only about 2,800–2,900 mAh – much lower than the iPhone 15 (3,349 mAh) or iPhone 16 (expected 3,561 mAh).

Apple tries to save with AI technology and new batteries

Not stopping at cutting, Apple is said to be trying to optimize the battery with many approaches:

• Using high-density silicon-anode batteries, helps increase energy storage efficiency by about 15–20% without thickening the device.

• Integrated C1 modem developed by Apple, replacing Qualcomm chip, with significant power saving ability.

• iOS 26 is expected to integrate artificial intelligence (Apple Intelligence) to optimize battery management based on user habits – for example, automatically reducing performance or adjusting screen refresh rate when not needed.

Battery case – mandatory “firefighting” solution?

Despite the efforts to improve, Apple can still launch a battery case specifically for the iPhone 17 Air – a similar move that was applied to the iPhone SE or previous small battery models. This indirectly admits that the battery life of this model is difficult to meet the expectations of the majority of users, especially the group that often works on mobile, shoots videos or plays games.
