Shortly after the iPhone 17 went on sale, some customers reported that the back glass and camera cluster were easily scratched. These marks appeared most clearly on the display devices at the Apple Store, causing many people to worry about the durability of the product.
According to 9to5Mac , Apple said the main cause comes from the MagSafe dock used to secure the iPhone in the store. After a long time of use, the metal ring on this charging dock is worn, leaving marks on the surface of the device. Apple confirmed that this is not a permanent scratch due to external materials, but just residue from the dock that sticks to the phone and can be removed when cleaning the device.
“These defects are related to wear on the MagSafe dock. Other iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, have had similar issues at some stores,” an Apple representative told 9to5Mac .
To limit this situation, Apple has started to deploy two solutions. First, some Apple Stores have installed silicon rings around the edges of the display counters, to reduce direct friction between the phone and the metal surface. This method was recorded at the newly opened store in Ginza (Japan).
In parallel, Apple has also asked employees to increase the frequency of cleaning display devices. According to Bloomberg author Mark Gurman, the iPhone maker has instructed employees to add a type of salt to a regular cleaning solution to deal with stains from the MagSafe dock. Although Apple did not reveal the details of the formula, Gurman said the mixture is better at removing marks than water or alcohol.
In fact, some users who have tried similar methods at home have reported that they have been able to clean stains on their iPhones using a solution of water and sea salt. However, the effectiveness may vary from case to case and there is no official confirmation from Apple that this method is recommended.
Currently, the above measures are only to handle scratches on display devices in stores. Apple has not made any announcement regarding warranty or support for products that customers have purchased.
