Hospitalized, missed flight because Samsung ring battery swelled

Samsung has admitted there was a rare incident where a Galaxy Ring inflated, sending a YouTuber to the hospital and causing him to miss his flight.

On September 29, tech YouTuber Daniel Rotar posted on X a photo of a deformed Galaxy Ring that he could not remove from his finger.

According to the post, the swelling began while Rotar was preparing to board a plane. He said the ring was painful and could not be removed, and tagged Samsung accounts seeking help. A close-up photo posted shortly afterward showed the inner casing had split open.

Updated a few hours later, the YouTuber said he was denied boarding the plane and had to go to the hospital to remove the ring.

Rotar explained that nurses had to use ice to reduce swelling and a medical lubricant to get the device out. He had previously tried to remove the ring with soap and hand lotion at the airport, but it only made things worse and even caused the battery to swell further.

Photos taken after the wearable was removed show the Galaxy Ring's internals visibly deformed. Rotar summed up the experience bluntly, saying he would never wear a smart ring again.

Responding to Android Authority , Samsung admitted that this was a rare incident. “Customer safety is our top priority. This is an extremely rare case, and we are in direct contact with Mr. Rotar to recall the product and understand the concerns,” a Samsung representative said.

The Galaxy Ring smart ring was launched by Samsung in July 2024 with a compact design, weighing only 2.3g. The main features of the Galaxy Ring are related to health, physical activity with a compact size, sensors for all-day monitoring.

In particular, Energy Score mode uses Galaxy AI to calculate the user's energy based on sleep, activity, heart rate, and heart rate variability during sleep.
