Supermarkets increase food supplies to storm Bualoi areas, to avoid shortages and price increases.

(Dan Tri) - Major retail systems have simultaneously increased their reserves and transported goods from many regions to the Central region, both to stabilize prices and ensure essential supplies during and after storm Bualoi.

The continuous rain and storms in recent days in many regions of the country have caused a sharp decrease in the supply of vegetables. Although not directly affected by Storm Bualoi, the prices of many vegetables and fruits in Ho Chi Minh City have increased because vegetable growing areas have been flooded.

Vegetable prices skyrocketed, some types doubled.

On September 30, at Vinh Loc B market (HCMC), the prices of many types of green vegetables increased sharply, some even doubled. Lettuce jumped from 30,000 VND/kg to 45,000 VND/kg; green cabbage increased from 20,000 VND to 30,000-35,000 VND/kg; tomatoes from 20,000 VND/kg to 35,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Tran Ngoc Anh, resident of Tan Vinh Loc commune, said that the price of tomatoes and cucumbers was 20,000 VND/kg last weekend, now it is 30,000 VND. "The price has increased so suddenly that I only buy enough to eat for the day, I don't dare buy as much as before," she said.

Traders confirmed that vegetable supplies were severely affected by the storm. Ms. Han, a vegetable seller at Vinh Loc B market, said that despite high prices, many of the goods were damaged, making buyers hesitant. “Almost all types of vegetables have increased in price by 30-50%, some have doubled. I am worried that prices will continue to increase in the next few days,” she said.

At the spontaneous market on Road 7 (Tan Tao Ward), Mrs. Tam, a vegetable seller, said that for nearly a week she has only dared to import a small amount of goods because of high prices and weak purchasing power. “Vegetables are easily spoiled when it rains heavily. The supply from the northern provinces and Lam Dong is scarce, so the prices of mustard greens, lettuce, and water spinach have all increased sharply,” she said.

Not only green vegetables, some fruits also increased slightly in price from 3,000 VND to 5,000 VND/kg. Da Lat persimmons are currently 55,000 VND/kg, tangerines are 55,000 VND/kg, grapefruits are 35,000 VND/kg...

According to traders, the supply of vegetables from the provinces to Ho Chi Minh City has decreased sharply, while the amount of vegetables from cooperatives and gardens in the city has also decreased.

Mr. Tran Van Thich, Director of Phuoc An Agricultural - Production - Trade - Service Cooperative, said that on average, the cooperative only supplies 600-700 kg of vegetables to the market each day. "Before the rainy season, the cooperative brought more than 1 ton of clean vegetables to the market per day, but the continuous rains in the past few weeks have caused farmers' productivity to drop sharply," Mr. Thich said.

Retail systems increase supply to storm areas

Faced with fluctuations in vegetable prices at traditional markets and the risk of supply disruption due to storm No. 10, major retail chains have simultaneously activated emergency response plans.

Not only increasing reserves, retail businesses also build a “two-tier scenario”: preparing goods in the storm center and arranging reserve warehouses in neighboring localities for timely support. Thanks to that, even when storms cause local isolation, essential goods are still circulated.

Some units have also implemented policies to strongly reduce prices of fresh products and necessities, to share difficulties with people. Bach Hoa Xanh has launched many promotional programs "buy 1 get 1 free" for water spinach, green cabbage, amaranth... to help reduce the burden of spending.

Saigon Co.op has increased the quantity of essential goods such as instant noodles, instant food, processed foods, milk, bottled water, eggs... by 2-3 times at supermarkets in areas directly affected in Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri..., applied subsidy programs with discounts of 10-15-20%, increased supply...

According to a representative of Saigon Co.op, more than 800 points of sale in the system simultaneously became “satellite warehouses”, coordinating with the distribution center to regulate goods in a timely manner. Goods were reinforced from both the South and the North: transport vehicles departing from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi continuously brought goods to the Central region, while neighboring provinces near the storm center also prepared reserve goods for support.

MM Mega Market Vietnam also quickly deployed a response plan to maintain supply. The company prioritized essential goods such as dry food, drinks, vegetables, fruits, meat and fish to be ready to serve people's needs...
