Potential, advantages
After the merger, Tan Chau town (old) has 2 wards and 3 communes: Tan Chau, Long Phu, Tan An, Chau Phong, Vinh Xuong. These are areas with great potential for trade, services, border trade , river tourism and high-tech agriculture. If Vinh Xuong commune has advantages in border trade, Tan An and Chau Phong communes are strong in high-tech agriculture, river tourism and craft villages.
“Tan Chau has a strategic location with the Vinh Xuong international road and river border gate - one of the most important border gates in the southwestern border region. This is the gateway for international trade, creating conditions for the development of logistics, border trade, tourism , and craft villages. By exploiting this advantage, Tan Chau has developed remarkably”, Mr. Huynh Quang Ngu - former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Tan Chau City Party Committee (old) affirmed.
A clear proof is that in the first 8 months of 2025, the export turnover through Vinh Xuong border gate reached nearly 500 million USD - a figure that affirms the great potential of the border trade economy here. Mr. Bui Thai Hoang - Chairman of Vinh Xuong Commune People's Committee said: "In recent times, the province has paid attention to investing in infrastructure, expanding urban space and promoting the development of border trade economy. Many key projects have been completed, including Tan An bridge, a regional connecting road".

Despite many advantages, Tan Chau ward still has "bottlenecks" that hinder development. Traffic infrastructure is not synchronized, some projects are behind schedule; planning work lacks regional connectivity; coordination mechanisms are ineffective. Social investment resources, especially from the private sector, have not been strongly exploited.
Although the border trade economy is vibrant, it lacks supporting services such as logistics, warehousing, and product quality inspection. Although river tourism and craft villages are abundant, their products are small and lack a synchronous service chain. Agriculture , although strong in rice, fruit tree, and aquatic product production (especially pangasius fry), has low added value and limited technology application, while climate change and riverbank erosion threaten people's livelihoods. Many experts warn that if these limitations are not resolved soon, they will reduce Tan Chau's resilience and hinder its goal of becoming a growth pole.
Breakthrough solution
To unlock its potential, Tan Chau needs to synchronously deploy groups of solutions, specifically on traffic infrastructure and regional connectivity. The central government needs to soon complete and upgrade National Highway 80B and build Tan Chau - Hong Ngu Bridge. Speed up the progress of the regional connectivity route through Chau Phong commune to connect Long Xuyen, Rach Gia, and Ho Chi Minh City via route N1; complete the infrastructure of Vinh Xuong International Border Gate, and develop logistics and warehouse services.
In urban and service development, Tan Chau needs to continue to implement the planning of building a modern, smart urban area, exploiting the night economy, forming a dynamic urban space. Invest in trade and service centers associated with border gates, and develop civilized border markets.
Regarding agriculture and processing industry, the locality has promoted the development of high-tech, organic agriculture that adapts to climate change. Strongly invests in agricultural and aquatic product processing industry to increase added value. Continue to form concentrated pangasius breeding areas as implemented by Viet Uc Group, ensuring a quality supply for the whole province.
Regarding tourism and culture, the ward continues to build and develop river tourism products and craft villages associated with border culture. Promote tour and route connections with Chau Doc, Tan Hong (Dong Thap), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) to expand tourism space. Particularly in the field of digital transformation and administrative reform, it is necessary to continue promoting digital transformation in urban management, production and processing.
Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Lam Minh Thanh emphasized: "The locality needs to promote investment attraction, administrative reform, create an open business environment; at the same time promote border cultural identity for sustainable development."
Tan Chau is facing an important moment to affirm its position. With its strategic location, rich potential and the consensus of the government and people, if it exploits its existing advantages well and acts decisively, the locality can completely rise to become a new growth pole of An Giang, contributing to promoting the overall development of the whole region.
“Localities at the source of the Tien River need to have a correct and full awareness of their position, role, potential and opportunities in the province's new development space to renew their thinking and vision, identify breakthrough tasks, and build Tan Chau to be worthy of being a central urban area and a driving force for development in the northern region of the province,” noted Lam Minh Thanh, Deputy Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee. |
