Inspiring creativity in schools

With the motto “Learning goes hand in hand with practice”, for many years, Moc Ly High School, Moc Chau Ward has widely deployed scientific research activities among students. Thereby, promoting the movement of self-study, exploration, and scientific research in each student, gradually improving the quality of education, encouraging students to apply the knowledge they have learned creatively in life.

The project "Manufacture of absorbent foam materials from Chitosan and tobacco leaf extract" won second prize in the provincial science and technology competition for high school students.

To promote scientific research activities in schools, the Board of Directors and mass organizations in the school have stepped up propaganda work, encouraging teachers and students to participate in the movement of writing initiatives and scientific research. At the same time, directing professional groups and teachers to orient research content in accordance with the reality, capacity and strengths of each student so that they can practice and effectively apply the knowledge they have learned into practice. From 2020 to now, each year, the school has had from 18 to 24 projects participating in the school-level competition; from which 5 to 6 best projects are selected to participate in the provincial and national competitions. As a result, 1 fourth prize for the national project; 1 first prize, 8 second prizes, 8 third prizes for the provincial project.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Huong, Vice Principal of the school, said: The school always encourages and motivates students and teachers to participate in research and innovation. The results of the innovation competitions have demonstrated the enthusiasm and passion of the teachers and students of the school. Students are interested in youth innovation and science and technology competitions; they have more opportunities to learn, explore, discover new and strange knowledge and creative thinking that will be helpful for their future studies.

As instructors, teachers not only support students with professional knowledge but also guide research methods, planning skills, presentation, and thesis defense. Many teachers have spent a long time with students conducting field surveys, conducting experiments, editing reports, and training presentations, helping students develop a serious and scientific research style.

Teachers of Moc Ly High School guide students to research the project "Making absorbent foam material from Chitosan and tobacco leaf extract".

As one of the teachers who regularly accompanies students in scientific research projects, Ms. Bui Mai Lan, IT teacher at Moc Ly High School, shared: During the teaching process, we discover students with good qualities and ideas to guide and support them in the research and product testing process, as well as guide them in report writing and presentation skills. Each project recognized by all levels is a testament to the tireless efforts of both teachers and students of the school.

With the trust and support from the school and teachers, students have also proactively created and expressed their passion for scientific discovery. Research topics are diverse, highly applicable and close to life, spanning many fields. Typical projects include "Model of combining wind towers and seaweed to filter CO2 and air conditioning"; "Manufacture of absorbent foam materials from Chitosan and tobacco leaf extract" in the field of biochemistry - environment, or projects on school psychology such as "Some solutions to prevent cyber violence"; "Psychological effects of stage lights"...

Turning weeds into potential medical materials, students have researched the project "Making absorbent foam materials from Chitosan and tobacco leaf extract". Sharing the idea of implementing the project, Nguyen Le Bao Anh, the group leader, said: Our idea came from seeing that open wounds, if not properly cared for, are very susceptible to infection. Meanwhile, many products on the market are expensive. Through research, we learned about Chitosan, a natural polymer, safe and also has antibacterial properties. From there, we came up with the idea of why not try combining these two materials to create a new medical material that is effective, cheap, and environmentally friendly.

Turning the idea into reality, the project team successfully created a porous material from Chitosan and tobacco leaf extract with a porous, uniform structure, showing good compatibility between the two components. The good news is that these material samples not only absorb water well but also have good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and are not toxic to cells. The project won second prize at the Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Competition for students in the 2024-2025 school year.

With the right investment and the spirit of learning and constant creativity, we believe that the scientific research movement at Moc Ly High School will go further, continuing to be a nursery for young scientific talents, contributing to improving the quality of education of the school.
