Recently, people passing through the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho underpass said that although the underpass helps the traffic flow on Nguyen Van Linh Street to be smoother, traffic jams still occur on Nguyen Huu Tho Street.
Some people think that the main reason lies in the infrastructure that has not been upgraded synchronously and the unreasonable lane division and traffic lights, causing traffic conflicts when turning.
To fundamentally resolve the congestion, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just approved a plan to compete for architectural designs to complete the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho intersection and the Nguyen Huu Tho intersection with the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway.
The two intersections are part of the North-South axis upgrade project (from Nguyen Van Linh to Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway), combining the construction of overpasses and the completion of the entire intersection, creating a smooth axis from the south into and out of the city center. The total capital for the two intersections is about 2,400 billion VND from the budget.
According to the plan, the competition will be held widely, with no limit on the number of participants, to select a modern, feasible and iconic architectural solution for the southern gateway area of Ho Chi Minh City.
Qualified consulting units will be invited to the design round, presenting the most optimal plan for the selection council to review, rank and submit to the City People's Committee for approval. The expected organization time is about 75 days from the date of approval of the plan.

Regarding this issue, the Department of Traffic Works Maintenance and Operation Management (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction) said that the current traffic light system at this intersection consists of three main phases, in which the left turns are arranged separately.
However, due to the high traffic density, there are still intersections in each phase, especially between left-turning vehicles and straight-going vehicles. In addition, the right-turning lane from Nguyen Van Linh to Nguyen Huu Tho is often congested due to mixed traffic.
In the short term, the city is implementing a ban on trucks over 2.5 tons and passenger cars over 30 seats from passing through the intersection from 6am to 8pm every day to reduce conflicts between heavy vehicles and motorbikes. However, in the long term, the key solution is still to speed up the progress of the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho overpass project to separate left-turning and straight-going traffic, reducing the load on the entire area.
Previously, Ho Chi Minh City completed phase one of this intersection with two two-way underpasses on Nguyen Van Linh Street, helping to significantly reduce congestion compared to before.
