A Korean Air Boeing 737-8 taking off

The Straits Times reported on June 24 that a Korean Air plane had to turn back to its departure point after losing nearly 8,200 meters in altitude in 15 minutes, causing 13 people to be hospitalized.

Passengers on flight number K3189 from Incheon International Airport (South Korea) to Taichung (Taiwan) later arrived safely on June 23.

The day before, the flight had to divert back to its departure point due to a plane fault that sent 13 people to the hospital.

The flight departed at around 4:45 p.m. on June 22 (local time) with 125 passengers. About 50 minutes after takeoff, the plane issued a warning about a fault in the pressurization system, which regulates the pressure inside the cabin.

Data from the flight tracking website Flightradar24 shows the plane fell nearly 8,200 meters in 15 minutes. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 then returned to Incheon International Airport at around 7:40 p.m., about three hours after takeoff.

The Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper, citing the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, reported that 15 passengers suffered pain in their eardrums. Thirteen passengers were taken to hospital after the plane landed. There were no reports of major injuries.

The flight took off again on the morning of June 23 with another plane, about 19 hours from the original departure schedule, according to Korean Air.

The Taipei Times quoted some passengers as saying after arriving at Taichung International Airport that they were scared and would not fly again for a while.

A passenger named Tang said he was afraid the plane would crash to the ground, children in the cabin would cry, and oxygen masks would fall.

An airline spokesman said the airline was investigating the exact cause of the diversion and planned to service the plane after inspection.
