Reuters reported on December 27 that NATO will increase patrols in the Baltic Sea region, following an incident with an underwater cable connecting Finland and Estonia.

Earlier, on December 25, the Finnish electricity company Fingrid said that EstLink 2, an underground power cable connecting Finland and Estonia, had stopped operating, adding that there were two ships near the cable before the incident.
On the social platform X, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on December 27 that he had discussed with Finnish President Alexander Stubb the investigation conducted by Estonia and Finland into the possibility of sabotage. Mr. Rutte also spoke out against any act that destroys the essential infrastructure of member countries, and called for solidarity within NATO.
