Polish army has only enough ammunition for 2 weeks of war

The Polish army had only enough weapons to fight for two weeks in case of a territorial attack.

In a media interview on March 26, Director of the Polish National Security Service Dariusz Lukowski said the army only has enough weapons to hold out for two weeks if attacked, before allied forces arrive to support, according to The Kyiv Independent .

"Depending on the development of the war, the defense could last for 1-2 weeks based on the current level of weapons reserves," Mr. Lukowski said.

The official admitted that the Polish army still uses old equipment and weapons alongside modern ones. However, the problem of weapons shortage only affects old systems while new systems are fully supplied.

Mr Lukowski said Poland had supplied a lot of weapons to Ukraine but stressed this was carefully calculated while new weapons were being added.

Earlier, opposition political groups in Poland criticized the state of defense production in the country and said that Warsaw only had enough ammunition to fight for 5 days. When asked about this, Mr. Lukowski said that time depends on the type of weapon and ammunition.

The official said Poland would have enough time to restore its military capabilities while Ukraine fights Russian forces.

Poland borders the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus. Poland has been one of the NATO members most supportive of Ukraine since Kyiv's conflict with Moscow erupted in 2022.

To bolster its defenses, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently announced that the number of troops deployed along the border with Belarus has increased to 11,000. In March, Tusk also introduced a voluntary military training program for all adult males, according to Militarnyi .

Meanwhile, President Andrzej Duda has called on the US to deploy nuclear weapons in Poland as a deterrent.
