Russia claims to have repelled border attacks

Russia's Defense Ministry said it repelled three cross-border attacks on Thursday near the town of Shebekino in the Belgorod region, accusing Ukraine of using "terrorist troops" to carry out attacks on Russian civilians.

"The selfless actions of Russian servicemen repelled three attacks by Ukrainian terrorists," the Russian Defense Ministry said. "Violation of state borders is not allowed."

The Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), a far-right paramilitary group made up of pro-Ukrainians, claims to be fighting inside Russia. “The second stage promised by the RVC commander has begun!” the group announced on Telegram.

Ukraine denies its military is involved in incursions into Russia's Belgorod border region and says they are carried out by Russian volunteer fighters.

Moscow has accused Ukrainian "terrorists" of targeting Russia's western border. Russian officials say the militant group is a proxy force run by Ukraine.

The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said Ukrainian armed forces repeatedly shelled Shebekino with Soviet-era 122 mm Grad rockets, setting fire to a dormitory and damaging an administrative building.

Belgorod region is located in western Russia, near the border with Ukraine.

He said at least nine civilians were injured, with hundreds of children, women and elderly people evacuated. Video showed a fire at a large building in Shebekino, Belgorod.

In Kiev, Ukraine said it shot down 10 Iskander ballistic and cruise missiles in the 18th Russian attack on its neighbor's capital since early May.

The UN human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine said six children were killed and 34 injured in May alone. Russia denies targeting civilians.

In another development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday he had received strong support from allies attending a European summit in Moldova on the issue of supplying fighter jets to Kiev.
