According to the draw results on the afternoon of October 2 at the headquarters of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), U23 Vietnam is in Group A of the 2026 AFC U23 Championship finals. The opponents of coach Kim Sang-sik and his students are U23 Saudi Arabia (host), U23 Jordan and U23 Kyrgyzstan. Of which, U23 Kyrgyzstan is participating in the tournament for the first time.
Group C is considered the most difficult group with the participation of Uzbekistan, South Korea and Iran, all representatives of the top football nations in Asia. The remaining team is Lebanon, participating in the tournament for the first time.
Group A is suitable for U23 Vietnam. Except for the host U23 Saudi Arabia who has many outstanding factors, U23 Vietnam has a great chance to compete for a place in the next round with the remaining 2 teams.
Vietnam U23 team participated in the U23 Asian finals for the 6th time.
In the previous 5 times participating in the AFC U23 Championship finals, U23 Vietnam passed the group stage 3 times. Among them, the generation of players Nguyen Cong Phuong, Nguyen Quang Hai, Doan Van Hau... entered the final match in 2018 with coach Park Hang-seo. Under the guidance of coaches Gong Oh-kyun (2022) and Hoang Anh Tuan (2024), U23 Vietnam reached the quarter-finals.
Vietnam U23 qualified for the 2026 AFC U23 Championship as the top team in Group C of the qualifying round. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team defeated Bangladesh U23, Singapore U23 and Yemen U23 without conceding a single goal.
In addition to U23 Vietnam, the remaining 10 group leaders who qualified are U23 Jordan, U23 Japan, U23 Australia, U23 Kyrgyzstan, U23 Thailand, U23 Iraq, U23 Qatar, U23 Iran, U23 South Korea and U23 Syria. The group of 4 best second-placed teams are U23 China, U23 Uzbekistan, U23 Lebanon and U23 UAE.
This is the 6th time U23 Vietnam has qualified for the U23 Asia. This achievement is only behind 6 teams: Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Japan, Australia, Iraq, South Korea and Uzbekistan (7 times). The only time Vietnamese football did not have a representative participating in the tournament was in 2013, when the tournament was first held.
